However, some of the earliest mention of coffee in the area can be found in a document from 1692. In that document, it is mentioned that a man by the name of John Day was running a coffee house in what is now known as Old Town Alexandria. The first coffeehouse in Falls Church was built on New Market Street in 1824 by Nicholas Comstock and his brother-in-law Captain Benjamin Banneker. The first commercial roast of coffee was made at Banneker's store on May 25th, 1825. It is said that Captain Banneker roasted beans himself and he also served as a consultant for the early roasters at Madison Coffee House and Prince George's Coffee House. By 1830, there were numerous coffee houses throughout Falls Church with various methods of roasting their beans - including French press, Dutch ovens, and kettles - all providing their patrons with unique flavors and experiences each time they visited. In 1835, Mr. Robert Cunningham opened his own grocery store on Second Street which became one of the most popular spots for purchasing fresh roasted coffee in town. At this time, it was also possible to purchase pre-ground beans from local mills which gave rise to another important aspect ofFallsmarch coffees: variety was key! Over time other businesses such as Mr. Cunningham's son Augustus' grocery store (1910), Mrs.'s Stores (1930), First National Bank (1940) followed suit until today there are over 20 different businesses located within walking distance of downtown Fallsmarch offering cup OF COFFEE!. Falls Church is part of the Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Washington–Dc–Baltimore Combined Statistical Area. It straddles the Potomac River northwest of downtown Washington D.C., and east of Arlington County. Falls Church was founded by James Nunn in 1777 as Loudoun County's second capital after Alexandria. The site chosen for Falls Church had been an area of swampy ground near present-day Spring Hill Road and Hagerstown Road on the north bank of the Potomac River opposite Georgetown. Nunn abandoned his original plan to build a new capital on this site because he believed that it would be too difficult to get supplies upriver against British siege lines while also providing protection from Native Americans who might attack during its construction. Nunn's idea to name his new capital after General George Washington generated much opposition within Congress but was eventually approved by President George Washington as part of his plan for national government under a single directorate with a centralized military command structure modeled after Great Britain's Royal Army and Navy Department.
