The United States Air Force has been giving gifts to people and organizations since the early days of its existence. The first gift given by the USAF was a set of wings in 1919. This gift helped start the air force as it is today, with its many different branches and missions. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force’s Air Forces Specialty Gift Program (AFSP). The AFSP is one of the most important programs within the USAF and provides unique opportunities for service members to receive special gifts that are not available through other channels. This program is designed to provide commanders with ideas on how best to express appreciation for their troops and inspire them to continue serving our country in difficult times. The Virginia Air National Guard's 413th Airlift Wing, also known as the "Flying Tigers" due to their participation in the Chinese Civil War, is the largestAAF wings within Virginian Commonwealth. Established on 1 May 1942 as the 367th Bombardment Group (Heavy), it was redesignated as the 413th Fighter Group on 20 October 1943 and activated at Robins AFB, Georgia on 11 December 1943. The group flew P-39D pilots from USAAF training bases around the southeast during January 1944 before being reassigned to RAF storage at Newton Abbot, Devon, England until 15 February 1944 when they assumed operational status with No. 417 Squadron RAF. In late 1945 and early 1946, flying personnel of the 413th FG were transferred to Japan for occupation duty in mainland Asia following World War II. Upon their return to America in late 1946, elements of this wing participated in various operations throughout 1947 and 1948 including airlift operations critical to support Operation Prairie which resulted in an American victory over Japanese forces at battle of Okinawa; during this time period also members of this wing served as a detachment from nearby Langley AFB's 514th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing which provided photographic reconnaissance cover for USAF strategic bombers while they bombed Hiroshima. On 19 September 1949 element of this wing became part of newly created United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) when it was reactivated at RAF Heston AB near London under command of Ninth AF's 527th Photo Reconnaissance Group operating P-47D Mustangs. Inactivated on 8 May 1952 when its mission was absorbed by Ninth AF's 338TH Photographic Squadron which had been activated two months earlier at RAF Coningsby AB north east of Lincolnshire concurrent with unit headquartersestablishment thereunder.
Falls Church is a city in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. Falls Church is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and includes parts of the incorporated towns of Arlington and Fairfax. It falls within ZIP Code 22634. Falls Church was known as "The Arsenal" because it was home to a large military arsenal during World War II. Falls Church was founded by Captain John Byng in 1799 as a small clearing on the Potomac River between what are now Arlington and Fairfax streets and Swenzer's Lane. In 1814, Captain George Washington laid out Fallstown Road through this settlement, naming it for General John Forbesfall (1755-1829), British general who had helped conquer North America in 1775. Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Braddock (1758-1840) laid out another road through present-day Falls Church in 1795 as part of his plan to cross the Potomac River from Maryland to reach Washington City. In 1849, when West Point Military Academy moved from New York City to west Alexandria Parish, then part of Prince Georges County, it established its own academy here at what is now Government House Square; Cadet Noontime Park still stands on that square today near where cadets first started practicing drill there in 1852. In 1861, when President Abraham Lincoln visited FallsChurch he stopped at Government House Square for lunch before continuing on his journey northward towards Gettysburg; while here he ordered construction of Fort Sumter along with nearby Barracks Hill (now Mount Vernon). Ida Bly served three terms as Mayor of FallsChurch from 1941 until her death in 1945; she is widely considered one of Virginias most successful mayors since WW2 In 1959 Congress passed an act authorizing erection of a Federal building called "The Capitol Building." This became effective February 1st 1960 and saw Congressman Lyndon Johnson become The First U S Senator from Louisiana.. On July 26th 1961 Gov't buildings were dedicated at 10 Downing Street SW after years effort by Mayor Ira Magness .On October 12th 1964 President Lyndon Johnson delivered his Farewell Address within earshotof Embassy Row tower which could be seen from Capitol Grounds across the river
