The Fairfax National Guard is a unit of the United States military that has been in existence since 1775. The first national guard unit in Fairfax was the 1st Virginia Regiment, which was organized on September 3, 1775. The regiment served under George Washington during the American Revolution. On November 25, 1781, the 1st Virginia Regiment was redesignated as the 2nd Virginia Regiment and served under John Adams during the Revolutionary War. On January 12, 1802, both regiments were disbanded and their members were combined into one battalion called the 2nd Battalion Fairfax Light Infantry. This battalion participated in disturbances throughout Northern Virginia during the period from 1802 to 1814. In 1814, these units were re-organized as two battalions again and served with distinction under Alexander Macomb during his term as Governor of Fairfax County. In 1845, both battalionswere disbanded and their members joined together to form the present day Fairfax National Guard unit. Since its inception,the Fairfax National Guard has played an important role in Virginian society by providing law enforcement and security services to residents of our county. Through its collaborations with other agencies such as local police departments and fire departments it has also become known for its ability to handle difficult situations quickly and efficiently.
