Fairfax is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 33,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area. The original inhabitants of Fairfax were the Powhatan and other Algonquian-speaking tribes who founded Jamestown in 1607. In 1871, Fairfax became a town when it was annexed by Arlington. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fairfax were the French in 1607 and Captain John Smith in 1609. early American colonists also visited this region and Jesuit missionaries had land holdings here by 1700 as they proselytized for Catholicism in what is today central Virginia. By 1725 most of this rural area had been purchased by Colonel James Tryon, who founded Arlington National Cemetery on land that he had bought from the Powhatan chief Wimpomock for $2 an acre (0·75 ha). Tryon named his new cemetery after himself – George Washington has seven headstones there – but it didn't become a national cemetery until 1872 when President George Washington's body was interred there along with six others under one common gravestone. In 1792 Alexandria and Fredericksburg were abandoned because of disease brought over by British soldiers during their military campaigns through North America and Europe; however, much later these two towns revived as thriving centers of tobacco farming which led to their incorporation into Fairfax County in 1871 following its annexation by Arlington from Prince Edward County. Thereafter, growth accelerated largely due to commuting within Arlington or Northern Virginia via buses from central Alexandria or even greater distances away including Manassas Junction where further growth occurred for many years until development finally affected all of Northern Virginia resulting in suburban sprawl throughout much of the eastern suburbs; while once contiguous villages gradually became divided up along racial lines with African Americans moving into white areas while Asians continued to move into black areas despite anti-Asian discrimination extending beyond just inner city boundaries After World War II some chose not to participate fully in postwar suburban expansion patterns which included growing single-family detached homes rather than suburban apartments built on open space such as those characteristic of previously rural areas while large numbers continue working inside their larger houses off-street parking becomes increasingly necessary providing limited access roads running perpendicular behind them Consequently transportation options have become especially important with increasing congestion caused not only by expanding suburbs but also downtowns whose residents rely on arterial traffic gridlock for jobsites etc…. between 1950 and 2000 our county’s population grew less than 1% each year while density increased more than 10 times……….. Most people living nearDowntown do so because they cannot get out or don’t want to leave their comfortable neighborhoods to try new things outside probable job sites……………. traffic Congestion has caused businesses Downtown nearly impossible to open during rush hours…………….. local government planners are trying unsuccessfully to find ways around increasing congestion without compromising qualityof life
Fairfax was founded in 1746 by George Washington and his wife Martha. The town was named after Fairfax County, Virginia, which at the time included much of today's Virginia. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1751, and by 1800, Fairfax had a population of around 120 people. In 1814, the town became part of the newly formed Alexandria Circuit Court district. However, it wasn't until 1861 that Fairfax attained its current boundaries as a separate municipality.
