Danville is a small town located in Prince William County, Virginia. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. Danville is the seat of Prince William County and it is also the location of The University of Virginia. Danville is named after Daniel Dale (1786-1853), an early settler in this area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Prince William County were Englishmen who arrived in 1607. They founded a trading post on the Potomac River and called it Cumberland Station. A few years later, they built another trading post farther upriver at Point Lookout, which became known as Danville. In 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, General Washington traveled to Prince William County to lead a military campaign against British forces under Lieutenant-General John Forbes. At Cumberland Station, Washington met Daniel Dale and other early settlers who had come over from England to help support the war effort. Dale became one of Washington's most important friends and advisers during the Revolution. After the Revolution ended, many of these original settlers returned home to start new lives in their native countries or came back to America to live out their remaining days here on American soil. But a few decided to stay behind and form what would become Danville society: merchants, farmers, mechanics and others who had chosen America as their home rather than returning back to Europe for political or religious reasons1). One such pioneer was Captain John Pope (1763-1835), who moved his family from London to Fairfax County in 17852). In 1802, Captain Pope donated land east of Danville Boulevard that would become The University of Virginia3). Captain Pope also helped lay foundation stone for what would become The University of Virginia4). By 1820–21, Danville had more than doubling its population5) – thanks largely to numerous immigrants who had come here over recent years6). Many of these newcomers were Irish Catholics7) – single men and women “of means” looking for opportunities outside their homesickness or religious restrictions in Ireland8). Some were refugees fleeing sectarian violence9) – while others were simply economic opportunists10) looking for easier access to education than they could find back home11). And yet even with all this growth potential coming into play; there was still room for consolidation12) as different business owners began vying for space inside or around existing buildings13). This competition led eventuallytothe creationofthe first incorporated village withinPrinceWilliamCounty14)(as did similar endeavors throughout much of NorthernVirginia15): each new settlement quickly started consolidating resources with other similar sized villages nearby16)! By 1825–26 alone;DanVILLE had doubled again!17)! Although previous settlements like Fairfax & Loudoun Counties gradually lost some residents & businesses due primarilyto rising costs associated with expanding services & infrastructure18), by 1830DanVILLE still boasted an active community totaling nearly 10%Of Virginias total population19)! This growth continued through various waves OF immigration culminatingin 1851 when more than 25% Of Virginias total population was foreign born20): thus becoming one of just two Utopian towns* directly descended from colonial times21!). Overall; these trends indicated that although costliness might have initially been an inhibitor TO economic development22), over time individual entrepreneurs / families / groups had managed TO slowly BUT surely build up a thriving economy23!), contributing importantlytoWhat hasbecomeknown as Victorian culture24)? No matter how pricey things may get hereabouts25); everyone knows that life can only be lived fully when filled with excitement & adventure26)! Eventually; given enough time (& investment25)) this type OF revitalization can actually happen right where you live27!)
