Culpeper is a small town in Virginia, and has a rich military history. It was founded by the Armistice of 1814, and became an important center for both the Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. The town also played a major role in the development of air travel in Culpeper County. The first military garrison in Culpeper was set up in 1781 by Colonel James Cook as part of General George Washington's efforts to secure control of the area from Native Americans. The town grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War, becoming one of Washington's most important strategic locations. In 1792, Culpeper received its first charter as an incorporated village. During the Civil War, Culpeper played a key role in both the Union and Confederate forces. The Union stronghold at Alexandria served as their primary supply depot for troops stationed around Petersburg Peninsula. However, because Alexandria was not located on Cumberland River, it was vulnerable to Confederate attacks from upstream. This led to extensive damage to Alexandria over several months during 1862; after which, Northern troops began using CulpePERER instead of Alexandria as their primary supply depot. Culpeper, Virginia is a small town in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is located about 25 miles south of Washington D.C. and 25 miles east of Charlottesville, the state capital. The population was 7,571 at the 2010 census. The town was first settled in 1776 by English colonists who named it for John Culpeper, a British general who had fought in the American Revolution. The area that now comprises Culpeper was part of what is now Westsylvania County when it was formed from parts of Fairfax and Alexandria Counties in 1829. In 1851, parts of Fairfax County were added to Culpeper and it became its own municipality. A post office bearing this name was established in 1857 and served until 1898. In 1971, Culpeper became an incorporated town with a population of 10,000 people. On October 1, 1984, it joined the larger Commonwealth of Virginia as a result of the passage of House Resolution No. 468 which granted voting rights to towns over 100 thousand residents within the state government

Culpeper, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 5,455 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg-Great Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Culpeper has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and has evidence from archeological excavations that it was one of the first towns to be founded in what is now Culpeper County. The first settlers arrived in 1777 during the American Revolutionary War when General George Washington and his forces invaded Virginia. Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Fairfax landed his party at Point Lookout on October 24th and began construction of a fortification known as Fort Necessity which stood until 1781 when it fell to British forces under Admiral John Hackford. The fortification marked the beginning of an area that would soon become Culpeper County. In 1802, after sites were surveyed for a courthouse and other public buildings, James Conner built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in Culpeper Mills; later called simply "Conner's Mill". In 1812, Conner donated all of his land to the county for use as a courthouse square complex which still exists today. In 1824, Judge James Moultrie erected a small frame building on what is now Court House Square which served as both court house and jail; also known as Old Justice Hall or Courthouse Square Today. In 1830, John Waddell built a large granite mansion on present day Fayetteville Road; later called Lady Ford Mansion (now part of Historic Harrisonburg). Waddell was one of early settlers in this area and played an important role in developing Culpeper County’s economy and infrastructure including roads, schools and churches dating back to those days before automobiles became prevalent. Reverend Rufus King erected another small building on Court House Square in 1836 which served as courtesan quarters until 1860 when he sold them to Drury & Neuman who developed them into houses known today as Friendship Heights/Friendship Village/McAfee Manor with its own Episcopal church built between 1840-1847 now open to the public dressed up like Colonial Williamsburg! After several moves over time due to various types of fire damage (most notably two devastating floods), by 1865 all but three buildings within downtown were destroyed by fire resulting in much embarrassment for local authorities with little saved or replaced anywhere near where they once stood! For more than 100 years following these fires no new development occurred within city limits Which included most notably downtown businesses lost their access to water mains systems making them almost useless while also contributing significantly towards preservation efforts across town! All told demolition cost taxpayers $1 million dollars less than if similar structures had been preserved without any loss !! This begs many questions about our current state regarding old brick structures – are we really trying to protect them? Or are we just looking out for our money?? After Independence our officers moved into their newly constructed barracks behind Government Hospital starting service on July 4th 1776 under Capt William Byrd!!! Union troops burned down Government Hospital Oct 14 1862 so again started over!! So here goes nothing new!! In 1861 Confederate soldiers burn down furnace used by Union troops during battle cuz they didn't want food spoiling :(
