Culpeper, Virginia is home to the oldest and most well-known coffee house in the United States. The first Coffee House was opened in 1698 by Nicholas Oudolf and his wife Catherine de la Motte. The Coffee House continued to serve coffee until 1811 when it burned down. In 1816, James Knyphausen reopened the Coffee House as a public house with a store on the ground floor. In 1837, John Randolph bought the Coffee House and changed its name to Randolph's Hotel. In 1865, John Fenton became owner of Randolph's Hotel and began serving coffee from his room above the hotel. From 1865 through 1916, Culpeper served as one of sixhub cities for world-renowned coffee roaster, Java Kingdom Incorporated (JKI). Today, Culpeper remains an important center for coffee culture in Virginia with over seventy-five cafes that offer a wide variety of coffees from around the world. JKI continues to be headquartered in Culpeper with their offices located within walking distance of many of these cafes.

Culpeper, Virginia is one of the most important coffee-producing areas in the United States. The town has a rich history dating back to at least 1750, when it was founded by Captain John Culpeper as a small trading post on the Shenandoah River. In 1806, Colonel James Monroe purchased the post from Captain Culpeper and renamed it after himself, Culpeper Station. By 1860, coffee production had increased so much that Colonel Monroe decided to build a mill on the site, which became known as The Mills of Culpeper (now part of Dillard University). Coffee continued to be produced in great quantities here until World War II when production fell off due to war chrome requirements. Since then, coffee production has been slowly increasing again and now accounts for about 60% of local sales.
Culpeper is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 12,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond metropolitan area. Culpeper is located on the Rappahannock River, approximately 20 miles north-west of Richmond and 10 miles east of Petersburg. It is bordered to the south by Lynchburg, to the west by Fairfax County, and to the north by Northern Virginia. The first permanent settler in what is now Culpeper was Nicholasrespousa who arrived in 1722 from Portsmouth, England with his family. He named his small point "Culpeper". In 1754 James Patton moved from Maryland along with his wife and two children to establish a plantation on present day Lombardy Street in what are now CulpePERtOWN. After three years he sold out and returned home to Maryland but within a year had again founded a plantation here at Rockville Pike about five miles northwest of today's town center. By 1800 there were over 50 plantations scattered throughout western Loudoun County which were all run by white men assisted only occasionally or never completely by slaves Here also tobacco became an important crop yielding 1/4 acre (0.20 hectare) per ton; rice was another major crop; some fields produced corn and other crops grew for hay or fodder; sugar cane growing began as well late in this period In 1802 John Pope established a mill at Pittsylvania Furnace close to where modern day Pentagon stands In 1806 Colonel Wofford leased 4,000 acres (1 km²) around present day downtown CulpePERtOWN from George Washington for $5 per acre ($160 per hectare). This early landowning community soon developed into one of most vibrant agricultural communities in southwestern Virginia due its access to markets both natural and man-made including river transportation as well as connections through roads leading northeastward into Pennsylvania Dutch country etc…. At this time much of what we see today near downtown CulpePERtOWN originated from purchases made during that era….. From Pittsylvania Furnace until 1865 when it closed down on account of heavy machinery being used thereon private individuals continued farming various types of crops such as corn, beans, squash etc.; later some larger farms acquired tractors so they could continue producing foodgrain….During World War II local farmers raised chickens for eggs then Provided them free or very low priced feed while military personnel cooked their meals……Today many people still live here not just visit but also commute into Richmond each day The commercial development happening around us has resulted mostly in new housing developments rather than businesses moving into old buildings values have more closely followed production costs rather than uses which once excited locals
