Culpeper, Virginia is home to one of the most famous gun gift history sites in the United States. The Gunground Museum is located on Thames Street in Culpeper, and it has been curatorially preserving firearms since 1871. This museum has a wide variety of handguns from all over the world, as well as military and sporting rifles from throughout American history. TheGunground Museum also has an extensive collection of ammunition and shot glasses from around the world. The Gunground Museum’s earliest guns were made by Samuel Colt in 1847 for Henry Clay Frick, who was then the United States senator from Kentucky. Colt produced more than 1,000 pistols at his factory in Hartford, Connecticut between 1847 and 1861. Many of these pistols were used by Union troops during the Civil War. In 1865, Colt merged with Frick’s business partner Nicholas Biddle to form Benjamin Noyes & Company. At this time, Noyes became president of Benjamin Noyes & Company and continued producing pistols for both Frick and Biddle until 1898. During this time period, Colt introduced many new models into production such as the Single Action Army (SA) revolver and soon became known as America’s favorite handgun manufacturer. In 1907, Benjamin Noyes passed away without leaving any children behind to continue his company’s legacy or carry on his pistol manufacturing skills into future generations. His son-in-law John Melson became president ofBenjamin Noyes & Company after his father’s death in 1912. Under John Melson’s guidance, Benjamins Pistol Manufacturing Corporation made its first rifle in 1916 under license from Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester). During World War I (1914-1918), Benjamins Pistol Manufacturing Corporation Produced over 2 million rounds of ammunition for American forces including over 700 machineguns! After World War I ended 1918 however following American entry into World War II (1939-1945), production stopped due to government restrictions on firearm production that had been put into place since President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9981 on April 16th 1933 which banned shotguns and other types of rifles not designed for hunting purposes! In 1949 Benjamin Noyes retired from active ownership of Benjamina Pistol Manufacturing Corporation effective December 31st 1948 thereby ceasing manufacture operations but leaving their archives open to research by students at Christopher Newport University! Today there are staff members at The Gunground Museum responsible for visitor access as well as curatorial upkeep while also caring for eight historical cannons that once graced Thames Street in Culpeper!

Culpeper is a city in Virginia, United States. The population was 14,624 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Culpeper County. A small portion of Culpeper lies within Montgomery County, but it is formally part of Fairfax County. The town was founded by George Washington and his first wife Martha on November 8, 1781 as Winchester on the banks of Rappahannock River. The name was changed to Culpeper in 1785 when General James Kenedy's brigade arrived from Fort Necessity in North Carolina and began operations against the British forces at Saratoga Creek Bridge. It has been reported that Washington named his plantation Mount Vernon after himself and his two daughters-in-law,, Martha (Mount Vernon) Custis and Eleanor Randolph Randolph (Richmond). In 1801, he sold Mount Vernon to John Jacob Astor for $2 million. In 1814, President James Kenedy recommended that Culpeper be rechristened "George Washington College" because then "the name would have weight with Virginians". However, no such decision was made public; only 12 years later did the school proprietors change it to its present name in honor of George Washington due to objections from local citizens who felt that a college named after their ancestor amounted to honoring him too much. Today there are about 350 students attending GW College which located on a campus dating back to 1792 near Interstate 95 Exit 5B off I-95 eastbound traveling towards Richmond;GW also offers online courses through GW Virtual Learning which provides access across all 50 states plus Canada and Puerto Rico! On October 1st 1905, the first electric streetcar service between Lynchburg & Charlottesville ran along original Mail Route 9W up Hanover Street past GW College until December 1st 1905 when it became continuous with new route #9N running along Main Street NW until discontinued September 1935 due to lack of funding following WWI! On April 15th 1914 local farmers created Sussex Drive SW out of an unused lot adjacent to Harrison Ford High School for use as a driveway leading into GW College for their automobiles!!! During WWII many homes were destroyed or taken over by military authorities but most were rebuilt either using pre-war plans or built directly from scratch!! After hostilities ended in 1945 many civilians returned home including those who had left during WWI & II replaced by displaced persons from Europe! As this community recovered some new houses were constructed as well including one new high school/college building completed in 2002 just outside culpeper town limits! The old post office building still stands today serving as a privy for children attending Culpeper Elementary School
