In 1812, John Stephenson founded what would become known as Stephenson Coffee Company in Culpeper. This company became one of America's leading producers of roasted coffees and continues to make great beans today. In 1824, Stephenson died suddenly and his company passed away with him - but not before leaving behind a legacy of excellence in coffee production.

Culpeper is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of Prince William County. The town was first settled in 1772 by George Washington and his soldiers who were on their march from Alexandria to Valley Forge when they came across the Culpeper River. The name "Culpeper" comes from Sir Walter Raleigh's captaincy over the area which included present-day Culpeper and parts of Fairfax County. In 1801, John Marshall, then US Chief Justice, moved to Culpeper from nearby New Market and became its first mayor. In 1847, General Robert Ewell took possession of land east of Culpeper Creek that he had purchased from Captain John Smith for $5,000; this property becameknown as Arlington Heights. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General James Longstreet attacked Confederate forces under Lt.-Gen. Pendergast near Carlisle Barracks west of Culpeper Creek; many local residents supported Longstreet while others opposed him due to his affiliation with Richmond. The battle resulted in over 20 deaths (of which more than half were Confederate troops) and 140 wounded or captured Union troops including General Sherman himself. Most importantly though was Union capture of two bridges over culvert located just outside town: one near Blair Road and one just east of Ulysses S Grant Boulevard today known as Bridge No1 (now bridge No2). This strategic victory helped join Northern forces besieging Petersburg before finally allowing them to escape in April 1865 after five days occupation by Confederate forces following a siege campaign that began on April 12th After the war ended in 1865, most members of Lincoln's cabinet either left or were pushed out by Radical Republicans led by Governor Andrew Johnson upon learning about their links to Reconstruction policies implemented by Johnson . As a result most white men who had owned land within CulpePER returned back into slavery while African Americans continued to be struggled under Jim Crow laws until well into the 21st century despite efforts made by various civil rights organizations such as SNCC
