Culpeper is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 11,759 at the 2010 census. The name comes from "Culpeper" or "Cutler's Green". The first permanent settler in Culpeper were two families who arrived in 1781 as part of the Virginia Colony. They named their new settlement after Colonel John Culpeper and his regiment of horsemen that fought against British forces during the American Revolution. Colonel Culpeper served as a colonel in the Continental Army and became an important leader of the patriots. Culpeper grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Rappahannock River between Prince George's County to the east and Fairfax County to the west. It became one of America's largest cotton plantations until it was destroyed by fire in 1851. Today, much of Culpeper remains rural with numerous farms and homes dating back to before 1800. There are also several small businesses located within walking distance of most residents including several restaurants, grocery stores and banks. The history of Culpeper can be traced back to around 1700 when indentured servants brought over by English settlers began working on farms near present-day Culpeper. By 1790, there were over 100 households living in what is now Culpeppertown along with a few small stores and taverns serving local customers for refreshments during summer months. A school was opened for children in 1796 and by 1800 there were three churches: one Presbyterian (founded 1698), one Methodist (1711), and one Baptist (1792). However, it wasn't until 1851 that things really started moving forward with regards to development when land developers James Waddell and Hiram Purnell acquired 1,500 acres (560 hectares) southeast of present-day culpeierville for $2 million dollars After surveyors had completed their work on what would become known as Cutlers Green area they issued a proclamation naming it "Culpepper" on October 10th 1851 following surveys which had been conducted earlier that year by Captain H Hendry Dodge In 1862 Captain Dodge again surveyed lands just south of current day culpeierville which he renamed " cutlers green" after himself . This area lay mostly agricultural with some scattered residential buildings built during this time period but nothing significant happened until 1865 when Captain Dodge discovered coal seams on his property which led him to begin developing brickyards adjacent to his brickyard complex today known as Dodge Brick Works . After various other business ventures failed he finally achieved success with Wheelwright & Son Brewing Co., established 1888., becoming America’s first brewery outsideof Canada His son James Waddell Jr followed suit soon afterwards becoming more successful still amassing an estimated $100 million fortune In 1916 James Waddell Sr died leaving behind an estate valued at $110 million Although not directly responsible for Culpeaper’s rebirth post-Waddells such development helped lead to increased availability of jobs throughout VA leading eventually to growth withinculpegerville itself such that today most people here can trace their ancestry back at least partly thereto It should be noted however that while many people do have some connection or connection through ancestors who lived here prior To 1861 almost all residents are descended from those original twelve families plus any number additional colonists who either moved into or briefly lived here before departing once contracts expired or returned home because they found better opportunities elsewhere
