Colonial Heights was founded in 1757 by the Virginia Company, which was chartered to settle a land grant from King George II. The company purchased 640 acres of land northeast of present-day Richmond, and named the settlement after Lord Highlandtown in Scotland. The first recorded settler in Colonial Heights was John Nicholson, who arrived in 1760. Nicholson's family operated a ferry service between the area and Queenstown, New York for many years. In 1786, James Robertson founded a small plantation on what is now 1st Street N.W., which became known as Robertson's Hill. In 1819, Nicholas Biddle organized a group of investors to purchase 624 acres of land east of present-day Richmond from the Virginia Company for $10,000. This led to Biddle's District (later Fairfax County) being formed out of portions of Virginia and North Carolina. At this time, Colonial Heights continued to be called "Hillsborough" because it lay along the then-highway that connected Petersburg with Hopewell Junction (now Lynchburg). Biddle built several homes in colonial Heights during his lifetime including Hahnemann House on 4th Street N., now known as Old Dominion University'sidence; White House on 5th Street N.; and Greeneville Plantation on 7th Avenue N., now home to American University's School of Public Affairs and International Studies. In 1875, General Richard Ewell served as commanderof Union forces during the Siege of Petersburg and ordered his men to burn down all buildings within range without surrendering or allowing civilians inside. This included Colored Home No. 4 on 2ndStreetN., which is still standing today as an example of early 20th century white supremacy in America despite its African origins! Starting in 1887–88 Census data reflect that black residents had increased population density amounting 3 times more than whites living within ½ mile radiusexcluding rural areas such as those around Richmond through out VA/NC borderlands – even well into 1920s when segregation prohibited blacks from living close together outside larger cities limits
