Colonial Heights is an unincorporated community in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the Potomac River and is a census-designated place. As of the 2010 census, its population was 7,876. The most recent Census estimate for Colonial Heights was 8,026. The area that would become Colonial Heights was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as part of the Colony of Maryland. In 18th century America, much of what is now Prince George's County was also part of Virginia. On January 14th 1775, during the American Revolution, a group of British troops marched through Colonial Heights and ordered all citizens to leave their homes without any warning or explanation. A limited amount of resistance continued until late February when Patriot forces arrived and overwhelmed the British soldiers at Battle House Hill (now known as Blue Grass Battlefield). Aftermath included over 100 casualties on both sides with about 20% of Virginians taken prisoner including some who were transported back to England as slaves. In addition, Virginia's economy suffered greatly during Reconstruction when southern white Democrats took control of Congress under president Ulysses S.
