The Virginia Coast Guard was established on April 12, 1775 as the first volunteer corps of the Continental Army. The original volunteers were men from Tidewater counties in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. In 1802, the Coast Guard became a part of the Union army under General George Washington. From then until 1861, when it was disbanded due to consecutive failed efforts at modernization, the Coast guard played a minor role in American military history. However, its legacy is multiplatinum because of its contributions to coast guard service in Colonial Heights during America’s colonial period. In 1606 English colonists landed on what is nowVA Beach and began developing this area into what is today Colonial Heights. On October 2nd, 1607 King James I of England granted a charter to John Smith for “the discovery and possession of all that part of North Carolina lying between Watauga River and Monocacy Creek” (nowVA). This land included present-day VA Beach as well as most of Hampton Roads including Portsmouth and Newport News (now Norfolk). It was not long before English traders began establishing themselves hereabouts. On December 3rd, 1609 William Byrd founded Petersburg along tidewater shoreline opposite modern VA Beach; he named it after his father Charles Lord Baltimore who had helped lead an expedition against Spanish Fort at Point Comfort on June 14th, 1608. At first there were only 12 residents in Petersburg; by November 1st 1584 there were 150! By 1700 almost all families living within two miles of town had moved out or been destroyed by malaria or other epidemics such as smallpox which ravaged Virginia during these years prior to European settlement. Although many people left town for fear of disease they did so voluntarily rather than be forcibly taken captive by English forces led by Governor Thomas Fairfax II following Bacon’s Rebellion (1676-77). A few later refugees from Jamestown made their way here but most left for new settlements farther inland around Elizabeth City (now Yorktown) or Roanoke Island due to lack cf food, water or shelter during those harsh times…. As early as May 10th 1585 Captain John Smith wrote: “We have met with no sickness since we came till now day…I am persuaded that God will continue His goodness unto us through this season” Unfortunately even though Captain Smith reported no illness he may have been referring to smallpox which killed up to 75% off Virginians in just one year(1584-85) coinciding with largePA spike in fever deaths caused by contact with Spaniards/conquest agents

The Coast Guard has been a part of American society since the 1600s. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has been a safeguard for our coastline and waterways. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect the homeland by providing humanitarian assistance and emergency response, conducting Search and Rescue operations, and maintaining law and order on our maritime coasts. Today, the Coast Guard operates over 30 different vessels including submarines, amphibious assault ships, cutterboats, Lighthouse keeperships and more. The Coast Guard's Gift History can be traced back to 1915 when President Woodrow Wilson offered $5 million towards the construction of an icebreaking ship called "HMS America". This gift was in honor of US President America who had saved many lives during World War 1. In 1922 Congress created the United States Merchant Marine Service which later became known as the Coast Guard. The first permanent Headquarters for the Coast Guards were built at patrolled ports along America's coastlines in 1935. In 1957 Congress designated Christmas as National Coastal Security Holiday which led to year-round Coastal Security Forces being activated on all US coasts from December 15th through May 25th. Since then, holidays such as Christmas have not only become popular tourist attractions but also occasions for coastal security patrols that continue throughout most of November each year. Colonial Heights was laid out in 1729 by George Washington and his father, James. The town grew rapidly because of its strategic location on the Rappahannock River. By 1775, Colonial Heights had a population of around 1,500 people. One of the early residents of Colonial Heights was John Floyd, who became a delegate to the Virginia Convention that voted to ratify the United States Constitution. On July 4, 1776, during the Boston Tea Party, about 20 men from Colonial Heights sat down on Lord Dunmore's ships and threw containers of tea overboard. This event is considered one of the most significant moments in American history. The colonists were angry at Great Britain for taxation without representation and they wanted their own government. In 1871, when Hampton Roads was created as part of Virginia's new statehood system, Colonial Heights became an incorporated town. In 1902 it merged with nearby Alexandria to become one municipality known as "Albemarle County". It has since been renamed "Richmond" and is now home to more than 200,000 people. The economy of Richmond is based largely on tourism; many properties in downtown are still used today as hotels or vacation rentals. There are also large concentrations of companies such as Microsoft and IBM in Shockoe Bottom - an area near downtown that has been transformed into a mixed-use district with offices, retail stores, and residential units built over centuries ago by enslaved African Americans who were brought here for labor purposes only to be sold back into slavery after being freed.
