The first Infantry Regiment in the Confederate States of America was organized at Christiansburg and named the “1st Volunteer Infantry Regiment”. Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest was its commander. Its barracks were located on Church Street. In 1875, when Richmond was occupied by Union troops, the 1st Volunteer Infantry Regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Virginia Infantry Regiment and moved from Christiansburg to Petersburg where it remained until it disbanded in 1898. In 1870, a ladies’ auxiliary called “the Christian Ladies Auxiliary for Relief” was founded in Christiansburg with the goal of providing clothing and food for soldiers stationed in nearby Petersburg. In 1871, this Ladies Auxiliary became known as the “Christian Soldiers Relief Society” and raised money for military purposes through donations from citizens. On October 15, 1876, during Confederate-American Civil War Battle of Appomattox Court House, members of the 3rd Virginia Infantry regiment volunteered their services to fight for their country and died fighting patriots under General Ulysses S Grant who had ordered them into battle against their own people! This is one of only two occasions that an entire regiment has given its life in service to his country (the other being World War I). The battalion disbanded on November 9th 1865 due to lack of volunteers throughout Reconstruction Era South Carolina state government decided not to renew its enlistment contract so all soldiers must have left by December 31st 1865! In 1902 a group of United States Smelters & Metal Workers Local No 293 formed a local chapter at Christiansburg with a specific goal – provide work opportunities for unemployed veterans returning home after World War I. The following year (1903), armistice came between USA and Confederacy resulting in many veteran families moving back into states such as Virginia because they could not find jobs anywhere else within three years post-war due to prohibition laws put into place by newly elected President Theodore Roosevelt who believed that warlords should be rewarded instead of punished after successful campaigns against them during Wartime Congresswoman Anna Kelley helped found what would become known as Roosevelt National Recovery Administration which provided employment opportunities for returning veterans regardless if they had served or not during WWI
