The history of Chesapeake, Virginia begins with the arrival of European settlers in the area in the late 16th century. To manage these new resources, Elizabeth appointed her Protestant cousin Lord Fairfax as governor ofVirginia. Lord Fairfax quickly became embroiled in political problems with other Virginians over land grants and power within the government. He resigned from his position after a series of conflicts with Queen Anne over these issues. In 1611, King James II came into power through a process known as coronation acceleration which gave him more authority over England’s provinces than any previous monarch had ever had. As king, JamesII made many changes to British society including increasing restrictions on religious freedom by making it illegal for Catholics to hold public office or perform certain ceremonies such as baptizing children or marriage). With increased royal power came increased scrutiny on Maryland’s relationship with Virginia due to fears that Maryland may try to gain entrance into England through its access to trade routes along the Potomac River Valley. Prince George County was also addedto Prince Rupert's Colony – an area adjacentto present-day Arlington County – as punishment for failing TO DEFEND THE KINGDOM AGAINST ENEMY FROM WITHOUT! So instead OF BUYING INTEREST IN AFRICA HE DECIDED TO CLAIM AN EXTRAORDINARY PORTFOLIO OF LAND FROM A YOUNG MAN WHO HAD JUST ARRIVED IN AMERICA WITH NOTHING BUT HIS KNIFE AND DOGS! After several failed attempts at seizing land from natives including burning down their villages etc.,Captain John Smith finally succeededin taking somelandfromthe Powhatan people near Jamestown on July 4th 1622 after monthslong warfare!!!
