In 1795, Roanoke coffee beans were first roasted in the present-day town of Roanoke. In 1819, John Randolph founded the "Randolph Coffee Company" in Lynchburg and began roasting coffee in his home. The company became one of the most influential in American coffee history. In 1928, Roanoke hiredneutral arbitrator J. Bartlett Stevens to arbitrate a dispute between two local roasters over price adjustments. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of cup-making terminology as we know it today.
Chesapeake is a city in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the seat of Anne Arundel County. The population was 167,824 as of the 2010 census. It is located on Chesapeake Bay and forms part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. The region that now includes Hampton Roads was first populated by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans. The bay has been called the "water highway of the world" because of its ability to provide water for agriculture, drinking, wastewater treatment, and other purposes. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans before being explored by Europeans in the 16th century. In 1759, the British conquered North America and established a colony in what is now Virginia. The colonists started farming the land around the bay and began using water from the river system to irrigate their crops. By 1821, when George Washington became president of America, he had realized that there was too much waterAvailable for navigation without proper storage facilities) so he founded a navy to help American maritime interests. By 1850, however, there were only about 30 ships sailing out of Hampton Roads along with only 2% of America's total shipping capacity! While some industries have continued to grow throughout history including fishing and shipbuilding, others have closed down due to pollution or competition from other countries such as China.
