The Chesapeake Coast Guard gift history begins with the United States Coast Guard. On January 1, 1898, the Coast Guard was established as an arm of the Department of Treasury. The first Coast Guard officers were sworn in at Fort Monmouth on Long Island on that date. On July 4, 1915, the Coast Guard purchased its first destroyer and began operations as a coastal patrol service. The next year, the Commandant took command of all coast guard forces in Hampton Roads and directed them to operate jointly under one command. In 1916-1917, eight destroyers were acquired and placed in service along the Virginia-Maryland line as part of this joint project. In 1924-1925, two more destroyers were acquired and placed in service along the Virginia-North Carolina line as part of this joint project. These purchases completed what had been started two years earlier by President Calvin Coolidge who authorized $1 million for construction of a new coast guard station at Norfolk Naval Shipyard which was opened on October 15, 1926. This new facility served both the military forces operating offshore from Hampton Roads as well as civilian vessels using it for harbor security purposes until it was destroyed by a fire on May 14, 1957 which caused major damage to it also. The last acquisition made by the Coast Guard during its early years occurred when three tugboats were purchased from Wright GNL Co., Incorporated - MCMULLEN (TUG 16), MCAULEY (TUG 17) and PEARL HARBOR (TUG 18). These boats proved to be very valuable assets during World War II when they became used for search and rescue missions off Maryland shores after Japanese submarines had torpedoed Ulysses S Grant’s flagship USS Constitution while she was moored at Baltimore Harbor. It is interesting to note that most of these vessels were donated or leased by their original owners who found themselves outclassed financially by subsequent governments who could build larger ships more quickly than they could donate or lease replacement vessels.

Chesapeake, Virginia is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,558. The town is named after England's Cheshire county and its river system. The name comes from the English word "cheshire," meaning "a picturesque district." The town began as a trading post on the Rappahannock River in what is now Northern Virginia. In 1692, James I of England granted land to Christopher Newport for his new colony of Jamestown in order to provide safe harbor for English ocean voyagers who attempted to circumnavigate America. This area also served as an early boundary between Fairfax County, which includes Mechanicsburg and much of southeastern Arlington County today, and Prince George's County on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), Chesapeake was one of four British settlements along the Potomac River that sided with America against France. On July 14, 1775, Patriot General John Forbes attacked Lord Dunmore's forces at Fort Necessity near modern-day Falls Church while Dunmore was besieging Yorktown Heights in support of British general Cornwallis. After Dunmore's defeat at Yorktown Heights, American forces captured Fort Necessity and destroyed most of English military infrastructure along the Potomac River valley during this period including artillery batteries and stores depot buildings such as those at Long Bridge across the river near modern day Eisenhower National Airport. One thousand Loyalists were massacred by Patriots under orders from high command during this event known as “The Massacre at Montresor” or “The Catastrophe at Montresor” because it remains one of history’s worst atrocities committed by Tories against rebels in North America during King George III’s reign (1774-1820). This victory allowed American forces to capture all but two miles (3 kilometers) of both banks of the Potomac River before retreating back upriver towards Yorktown Heights where they established a temporary government under Lt.-General Charles Lee before withdrawing further upstream to rejoin Cornwallis' army at Winchester on October 19th following a siege that lasted eleven days.). Aftermath: more than 1,500 loyalist prisoners were burned alive according to some sources; many others were mutilated beyond recognition when their clothing became identified later through DNA testing In 1814 Catherine Beecher founded what would become Stonington Academy in nearby Westonfield which she donated to serve as an agricultural school for children living around her home town surrounding Suffolk County until 1962 when that school merged into Wheaton College which still operates today as part of Georgetown University School Of Arts And Sciences
In 1616, Earl of Warwick and his brother, Richard III, were overthrown in a military coup. The new king, James I, executed both of Warwick's brothers and put himself on the throne. Over the next few years, events unfolded that would lead to the English Civil War. On June 25th, 1642, James II was defeated at Whitehall by a coalition of Protestant forces led by Oliver Cromwell. In 1645, Cromwell took power in England and began a series of legal reforms known as the Protectorate which aimed to suppress religious freedom and Protestantism. The war continued for another year until Charles II was restored to the English throne in February 1647 with assurances from Parliament that he would not raise any taxes without their consent. In 1649-50, Cromwell's army invaded England again and this time they were successful; however Charles was able to flee into exile with his family back to Scotland. After Cromwell's death in 1658/9 there was a period of Tory rule under General Monmouth before King Charles I came back into power and resumed hostilities against Parliament. On July 3rd1660 Yorktown arrived off England's coast with an overwhelming French armada; however after two weeks fighting the French were driven off. Withdrawing their forces America declared its independence from Great Britain on September 17th1776
