The Chesapeake Army National Guard (CAG) is one of the oldest and most active militia organizations in Virginia. The CAG was formed on February 14, 1775 as part of the Continental Army under the command of General George Washington. The CAG played a critical role in the American Revolution, and by 1781 was authorized to provide artillery and cavalry support to Washington's army. During the Revolutionary War, the CAG served with distinction as an infantry regiment, leading campaigns such as Saratoga and Yorktown. In 1802, following the admission of Virginia into Confederation, the CAG became a part of the Virginia Militia Department. By 1812, however, it had reverted to its original form as an independent militia unit. During this time period, members of the CAG also served in various mounted units including three regiments of dragoons and two companies of light Artillery. In 1821-22, during James Kenedy's first term as governor of Virginia Beach/Norfolk County (now Norfolk), he organized a state guard force called "The Black Watch." This force was modeled after disbanded British volunteer units that were being used by Kenedy to suppress illegal slave trade operations in his jurisdiction. The Black Watch eventually morphed into what is now known asthe Norfolk State Police. Following Confederate military victories at Appomattox Court House and Antietam Creek in 1865, General Robert E Lee ordered all militias within Virginias borders to be mustered out within four weeks or face destruction or surrender. A total of 1 million Virginians lost their lives during these years-more than any other conflict in American history*. As result of this order*, many high-ranking Virginians enlisted with Confederate armies during Reconstruction* - including Ulysses S Grant who later became President Ulysses S Truman*!*
