The city of Charlottesville, Virginia was founded in 1781 by Captain John Smith. It became a part of the United States of America in 1846. The city's rich history can be seen from its founding to the present day. Captain John Smith's initial settlement in what is now Charlottesville was on high ground overlooking the James River and was called "New Town." In 1778, after he failed to find new land for his colony, John Smith returned to Virginia and settled on land that would eventually become Charlottesville. He named his new town after himself, Charles Stuart Bruce, 1st Baron Bruce of Kilwinning in Scotland. New Town quickly grew into one of the most important settlements in early Virginia. Charlottesville began as a primarily agricultural community with small businesses and homes growing up around the area’s fertile soil and well-manicured gardens. By 1800, however, Charlottesville had developed into a vibrant commercial center with over 100 shops and businesses. Nathan Bedford Forrest made Charlottesville his headquarters during the Civil War years and many famous generals such as Ulysses S Grant and Sherman were residents or visitors here. Many local landmarks such as Battlefield Park (now renamed University Park) remain today testament to this time period including Robert E Lee's Confederate army encampment at nearby Cemetery Hill during the battle of Gettysburg; both sites are open to visitors for educational purposes only. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following the American Civil War, Charlottesville experienced rapid growth as a thriving industrial center with major employers like Maytag Corp., White Sulphur Mining Company (later Westinghouse Electric), Coca Cola Bottling Plant Nobel Laboratories etc., all locating here during this time frame between 1865-1920). However much like other Northeastern cities which rapidly attained prosperity following Reconstruction through heavy investment by both white businesspeople backed by northern philanthropists known as "the men without money," African Americans labored long hours working alongside whites but often were denied rights or advancement opportunities because they were considered part of lowest economic class within society--a condition which persisted until well into the 21st century throughout much eastern North Carolina among black rural residents who disproportionately suffered economically due to zoning/land acquisition regulations promulgated by white middle-class professionals while large plantations prospered].
The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 as a small college with land grant from James K. Polk. The university grew rapidly and by 1830, it had become one of the largest institutions of higher education in the United States. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked the university, killing nearly 50 people and wounding more than 300 others. The Confederacy lost the war and the university became part of the United States following its defeat. In 1865, white supremacists attacked black students at Charlottesville while they were celebrating their victory over Reconstructionism in South Carolina. More than a hundred people were killed and more than 500 injured when white supremacists and neo-Nazis descended on Charlottesville during what is now known as "the Unite The Right" rally.
