The United States Army deployed a gift to Charlottesville, Virginia in 1917. The gift was a field hand grenade. This grenade was donated by Captain Edward A. White of the 36th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army Volunteer Reserve, who served in World War I as an artillery officer with the 6th Divisional Artillery Battery, 41st Brigade (4th Infantry Division). In 1918 Captain White was discharged from his military service and returned to Charlottesville where he organized and donated a hand grenade launcher to the University of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and then gave numerous grenades as gifts to individuals and groups throughout Charlottesville throughout 1918-1918. One such group that received a grenade from Captain White was the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment Confederate Rifles Volunteers who used them during World War I on various battlefields including Petersburg and Fredericksburg. After the war ended these rifles were reorganized into Company E of the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment Carolina National Guard which later became part of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment Virginians (VC) in 1924 when it merged with 2nd battalion 5th regiment Vandals. These companies fought during World War II together at Anacostia River Bridge near Washington D.C., Iwo Jima and Okinawa before being disbanded in 1945 as part of demobilization process for all infantry units after World War II. In 1947 company E moved to Alexandria, Virginia where it continued its battle history with distinction until disbanding in 1978 when unit disbanded due to changing mission requirements for state guard troops changes since then headquartered out there instead at Fort Meade Maryland Headquarters Regional Command 4 Southwestern Division
