The history of the United States Air Force (USAF) gift to Charlottesville dates back to the early 1940s when the city was in full-blown war with Nazi Germany. The city's mayor, E.L. "Buzz" Aldrin, enlisted the help of General George C. Marshall, then Director of American Forces in Europe, to find a way for Charlottesville to send Christmas gifts to German military personnel stationed in Britain and France. Marshall called on Colonel Alex Goodyear, USAF Deputy Commander at Wright Field in Ohio, to come up with a plan that would allow Charlottesville to make appropriate donations while keeping the gift under wraps. Goodyear came up with the idea of sending RAF officers and their families RAF parcels filled with candy and cigarettes which they could exchange for goods from local stores. This plan was successful enough that it was repeated during World War II when RAF officers sent gifts such as cigars and whisky back home. In 1945, after the war ended, Colonel Goodyear passed away at age ninety-six; however, his legacy lives on through RAF Gift Day which is now celebrated annually in Charlottesville on December 15th.

The city was founded in 1779 by George Washington, who named it for his father General James McLean. In 1871, it became the capital of Virginia. In 1960, Charlottesville was renamed to honor John F. The first permanent settler in Charlottesville was Captain John Smith who landed on Roanoke Island in 1607 and explored the area which would become Charlottesville. He left behind evidence of his presence such as a tree he cut down that still stands today near Interstate 95. In 1779, George Washington granted land to Major James Craig for $500 and named the settlement "George Washington's Valley". After years of growth and development, General James McLean decided to move the capital from Philadelphia to Richmond due to political unrest there at the time. On July 20th, 1800, General McLean moved the capital again when he appointed Robert Ethoughts Fairfax as governor of Virginia with orders to build a new courthouse at what is now called First Street and Second Avenue (now University Boulevard). This event marked an important crossroads for Charlottesville since it helped solidify its place as one of Northern Virginia's leading cities. In 1860, after two days of violent protests against Confederate Genessee Lt Col William Troup's attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor (the largest slave revolt ever fought), President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation ordering all slaves within five miles of any Union army6 into free labor or leave their homes forever7 . This order effectively ended slavery in Northern Virginia while accelerating the process ofNorthern white flight8 . As a result of this event 9 ,000 African Americans were forced out10 . Many found refuge within nearby Petersburg11 where they continued working off-farm until 186512 . However, many more slaves took up residence within corporate boundaries13 . Today much remains unknown about these early residents including their motivations for coming to this area14 . One significant achievement during this time was construction on Boydell Hall which served as both an academy for young women1 and as headquarters for local militia during Reconstruction2 . It is also notable that this building played an important role in helping establish downtown as an important commercial district3 ,4 ). Additionally, many famous citizens lived and worked close by including Drury Lane theater star Edwin Booth5 ; author Harper Lee6 ; railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt7 ; inventor Thomas Edison8 ; basketball great Wilt Chamberlain9 ;and entrepreneur Ross Perot10

The first permanent white settlement in what is now Charlottesville was established on the east side of the Albemarle River by Peter Allen and Abraham Wood. In 1802, a group of Thomas Jeffersonians moved to Charlottesville from Monticello and renamed it after Jefferson's home state, Virginia. The city experienced growth during the antebellum period with construction of schools, churches, hotels and other infrastructure. However, economic conditions deteriorated in the 1850s as slavery increased in importance throughout Virginia. In 1861 Confederate soldiers raped one of these women named Elizabeth Cady Stanton while she was walking to her market place; this led to public outrage and drove many Virginians to Union lines. After the Civil War ended Reconstruction took hold in America with a new wave of African American immigration which caused violence within certain white neighborhoods against newly arrived black families. This led to increased law enforcement activity within Charlottesville which resulted in several arrests and convictions for disorderly conduct or violating segregation laws.
