Bristol, Virginia is a small town in western Virginia. The population was 5,245 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bristol County and the principal city of Bristol, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, Bristol had a population of 7,545. Bristol was founded by colonists from England in 1755 as a small trading village on the west side of James River. Afterward, many businesses moved out of downtown into newer buildings around First Street SW and Interstate 95 (I-95), which bisected downtown during its early years before eventually being rebuilt following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Today much older buildings along First Street remain vacant while more recent construction has taken place along I-95 adjacent to what used to be Third Street SW between South Broadway Boulevard (now 15th Avenue SW) and Interstate 265 (I-265). Today's economy largely depends upon service industries including education; health care; transportation; tourism; data technology; manufacturing; office space for government agencies; retail trade; food services ;and professional services although some light industrial production does take place within city limits along Second Street SE near Old Dominion University’s Innovation Campus plaza where research laboratories are located for several companies including Monsanto Co., Anheuser Busch InBev NV & Coca Cola Refreshment
