The Bristol Air National Guard Station (AFS) is the primary air defense mission of the Virginia Air National Guard. The station was activated on October 15, 1947 and is located in Bristol, Virginia. It is one of two AFS's in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The other AFS is with Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. The Bristol Air National Guards Station's mission includes providing aerial fire support for military operations in central and Eastern Virginia; providing personnel and equipment to support Federal law enforcement agencies conducting counterterrorism investigations; providing materiel support to civilian authorities engaged in Search and Rescue operations; providing an emergency response capability to incidents throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia; and providing disaster relief support.
