The original settlers were Creek Indians who named their village after General George Washington's home state (New York). When Captain John Smith discovered this location during his attempt to find new lands in 1775 he called it "Blacksburgh." After several failed attempts at settlement due to lack of water or other resources, Colonel Gist organized an expedition led by Col.(Gen.) Joshua Frye that arrived at Blacksburg on October 24th from Fortress Monroe with orders to build Fort Prince William which would serve as both a base camp for operations against Native Americans living within sight and also act as an insurance measure against French attacks on our soil should they penetrate downriver from Canada. Fort Prince William was completed in 1778 after only three months; however because there was no road connection between Blackstown and Alexandria then there was no way for reinforcements or supplies arriv
