The first African American military officer in the United States Army was Col. Benjamin F. Butler, who served with distinction during the American Revolution. In 1802, General John Forbes erected a battery on James River to protect Blacksburg from British attack. This battery became known as Forbes’ Battery and is still standing today. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia without any fighting or bloodshed! The Union army had won the war against the Confederacy and all black soldiers were discharged from the army immediately. However, white Reconstruction laws continued to apply to African Americans in southern states until after World War II when these policies were repealed entirely by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Today, there are more than 4,000 African American soldiers serving in U.S.military forces worldwide including 2200 active duty troops in Blacksburg alone! Many of these troops are deployed overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom – two of America’s most important global missions since 9/11/2001!
