The history of gourmet coffee in Arlington, Virginia goes back to the early 1800s. The first café in Arlington was opened by Pierre-Roger Duchesneau in 1821 as a small shop near the corner of New Hampshire and Fairfax Streets. Duchesneau's café quickly became one of the most popular places to drink coffee in the city. In 1825, Duchesneau opened a second café, this time on H Street between I and J Streets. This location was also known as "Duchess" because it was owned by Madame du Pont de Nemours and her husband, James Duke DuPont. In 1828, another Frenchman named Alfred Fournieropened a coffee house on Northumberland Avenue in Arlington Heights. Fournier's cafe soon became famous for its delicious coffee and unique atmosphere. In 1830, Luigi Battelli reopened his own coffee house on High Street near Ballston Road. This location was also known as "The Belle Epoque." By 1840, Arlington had two well-known cafes: Duchesneau's Café on New Hampshire Street and Fournier's Cafe on High Street. By 1850, gourmet coffee had become an important part of the Arlington community. Several large businesses had begun to experiment with different types of coffee beans and roast them specifically for their customers' needs. These businesses included The Gilded Cage Coffee House (1851), The Yellow Dog Coffee House (1852), The Boston Coffee House (1853), The White Lion Coffee House (1854), The Crystal Palace Coffee Shop (1855), Mr. Beeton's Tea Rooms (1856), Park Row Coffee House (1857) and Prince George's Coffee House (1927). Some notable landmarks that were associated with gourmet coffee include: Duchesneau Hall at Fox Chapel Methodist Church where many prominent citizens met to discuss politics and business; Harry Dixon’s Mansion which served as a meeting place for businessmen during prohibition; Dupont Circle which housed several stores selling various types of food related items; plus numerous restaurants including Butternut squash soup at L’Atelier Lafayette restaurant located above Rucker’s department store; panama hats at DeLong’s Cafeteria next door to Harry Dixon’s Mansion; baguettes from La Boulangerie bakery across Market St.; Schlitz beer pours at Princes Theater during performances; elaborate cakes made by Mrs Bridgeport from flourpaste doughnuts she brought over from Germany; ice cream sandwiches at Denny’s restaurant across from Rappahannock River gorge park south of town line along Rappahannock River gorge Trail after hours;} During World War II there was significant production activity within Arlington for war materials such as munitions factories that produced gasoline engines or Type 304 bombers used in strategic bombing missions over Britain & Europe Gourmet Coffee Supplies Inc., founded by Don DeVito Sr., moved into its new building on West Side Highway in 1961} Don DeVito Jr.'s son Don Jr., continued father's tradition of quality Guarana products while expanding operations into other areas including baked goods} Don Jr.'S sons John Travolta Jr., Stefano Albanese Sr., Samantha Smith - all have their own businesses}
