This building served as the first municipal hospital in America and remains one of the most prominent examples of Victorian architecture in America today. During World War II, Alexandria played an important role as a supply point for military troops stationed throughout North Africa and Europe. The city also hosted large numbers of refugees who were displaced during World War II (such as more than 1 million Jews who fled Nazi persecution). After World War II, Alexandria experienced rapid growth thanks to suburbanization and new housing developments which were based on American principles such as efficiency and quality control.
