Alexandria, Virginia is a small town located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 21,451 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Fairfax County and home to many governmental and commercial buildings as well as several historical landmarks. The first permanent settler in Alexandria was James Robertson, who arrived in 1751. He named his new community after himself, Alexandria Station on the Potomac River. By 1800, there were over 20 settlements in what is now Fairfax County including Alexandria. The town's growth was due to its location on the river and its commerce with points north and east. In 1802, Alexandria became an incorporated city under the name of Richmond; however it reverted to its original name after three years when Richmond moved from Alexandria to northern Virginia (the present-day Washington D.C.). In 1824, President James Kenedy ordered General Robert Ewell to march on Alexanria without warning the inhabitants or giving them time to leave; this caused great outrage which led to Ewell's recall two years later. In 1829–30 Alexander McDowell built a large brick courthouse near today's George Mason University for use by both local government and county courts. This building still stands today as part of Arlington National Cemetery complex (just east of I-495). Alexandria suffered greatly during World War II from German bombing attacks that destroyed many businesses and homes; fortunately most damage was minor though some churches were completely destroyed such as St Basil's Episcopal Church which stood on Middle Street between 4th and 5th Streets NW for over 100 years until it burned down in 2014.
