Coast guard gift history in Alexandria, Virginia began with the establishment of the Alexandria Coast Guard in 1879. The Coast Guard operated out of a detachment at Fort Monroe until it was moved to its current location on the James River in 1927. At that time, the Coast Guard became part of the United States Navy and was renamed United States Customs Service. The first Christmas present given to an Alexandria Coast Guardsman was a watch. In 1892, Commander John Fenton gave a chronometer as a Christmas present to Sergeants George Wills and Alfred Cushing. In 1903, Captain Edwin Pogue gifted two watches as gifts to officers and enlisted men of the coast guard. From 1907-1972, Commandant Charles Eames presented three watches as Christmas presents to service members of the coast guard. In 1971, Captain Harry Ladd presented onewatch as a gift to all service members who served on duty during his term as Commandant. Since then, every year commandant presents one newwatch as a holiday gift for all those who serve on our waterfront protection unit including search and rescue submariners and coastal patrol boats operators from Virginia Beach through Newport News Shipbuilding Company’s USS Portsmouth (LPD-14). Today’s Coast Guard provides maritime security along our coasts from Maine to South Carolina; conducts Search and Rescue operations; responds during disasters such as hurricanes Katrina or Sandy; maintains beaches for tourism purposes; provides law enforcement services; educates citizens about coastal safety issues; responds when called upon by local authorities for assistance with emergency tasks such as removing hazardous materials from land or shellacked vessels offshore

Alexandria, Virginia is a small town in central Virginia that was founded by the British in 1757 as an outpost on the Potomac River. The town grew quickly, and by 1800 it had become one of the most important settlements in rural Virginia. It was also one of the most influential cities in America. Alexandria reached its peak during the late 18th century, when it became known as a center for education and commerce. But after a series of wars with France and Native American nations, Alexandria fell into decline and was abandoned in the 1830s. Today, Alexandria is a small community located within the city of Richmond. Alexandria’s history begins with the British colonists who arrived in 1757 to establish an empire on what is now southern Virginia. The colonists were led by Majors John Forbes and George Washington, who built Fort Necessity on Rappahannock River to provide defense against French forces trying to invade America from Canada. The fort served as a point of embarkation for British soldiers seeking to expand their empire into North America. But soon afterFort Necessity was erected, French forces began arriving in numbers, and by 1760 they had captured much of Quebec City and driven out the British garrison there. In response, Washington ordered his army to march northward across Canada towards Quebec City. However, while moving forward they came under attack from French forces led by Jean-Baptiste de Montcalm—the same Montcalm who had conquered New France some years earlier. Washington retreated back across Canada instead and encamped at Fort Necessity until relieved by Anglo-American troops under General James Wolfe later that year. The Battle of Louisbourg fought near Louisbourg Island – then part of Nova Scotia – on July 15th, 1758 helped secure Upper Canada for Great Britain following their victory over Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s French military expedition two months earlier at Niagara Falls (see: Battle of Lake Champlain). With this minor victory over an numerically inferior enemy force, Great Britain consolidated its control over all North American territory south ofLake Ontario before returning home to focus upon defending her colonies against potential attacks from Spain or France during the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763).
