That same year, the South Burlington Savings Bank donated a $5,000 check to the town for their new library. In 1918, the town established a Navy Department and hired Mr. John Fenton as its first chief petty officer. In 1920 South Burlingtonbecame an incorporated village andFenton resigned from his post as Chief Petty Officer to become Mayor ofthe Village. In 1922 South Burlingtonestablished its own fire department andMr. Fenton remained Mayor until his death in 1951. Mrs. Florence Wessels becameMayor after he passed away and served until she died in 1957; thereafter, Vice Mayor Harry Humes took over as Mayor until he attained his present position on May 1st, 1976
South Burlington is a town in the United States state of Vermont. The population was 8,851 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Vermont and the largest in Rutland County. South Burlington is located on Lake Champlain, east of Rutland and north of Montpelier. It lies within the Unitarian Universalist Church denomination. The first people to live in what is now South Burlington were French colonists who arrived there in 1634. The town was founded as part of a larger area called Northampton by General John Burgoyne and his men after they defeated New England's Indian allies at Saratoga during the American Revolutionary War. The town grew rapidly after Congregationalists settled there in 1795, becoming one of the most populous towns in Vermont. In 1800, South Burlington selected its own name, choosing "Burlington" based on its location on Lake Champlain and its similarity to other English settlements around that time such as Oxford and Cambridge. In 1836, South Burlington became an incorporated village when it annexed portions of neighboring Randolph Township. As villages went out of business throughout Vermont during the mid 19th century, South Burlington retained some control over its own affairs until 1912 when it became an unincorporated village again under common ownership with Randolph Township until 1974 when it gained full city status During World War II, much activity took place within South Burlington due to its proximity to military bases including Fort Drum and Montpelier Naval Air Station which housed carrier groups conducting air warfare operations from their vessels off shore South Burlington has been home to many famous residents including Ulysses S Grant who served as President from 1869-1877; Alice Paul who led her first successful campaign for Congress against then Republican Congressman David Levy; author Laura Ingalls Wilder; artist Edward Hopper; composer George Hergesheimer; actor/director Laurence Olivier

The town of South Burlington, Vermont was founded on the banks of the Bennington River in 1786. The town grew rapidly and by 1820 had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1825, the town adopted a charter that granted it certain rights and privileges not granted to other towns in Vermont. South Burlington became an important manufacturing center during the late 19th century. Manufacturing industries included textiles, Shoes and Boot manufacturers, and Papermakers. By 1925, however, these businesses had all moved out of South Burlington and its factories were closed down. Today, South Burlington is a small village with a few shops and restaurants.
South Burlington, Vermont was first settled in 1777. The community was then named after the South Burlington Parish on the western border of the town. In 1801, South Burlington became a part of Burlington and was renamed Cedar Rapids. In 1827, South Burlington changed its name to South Burlington again and it remains that name to this day.
