South Burlington, Vermont was founded in 1777 by Loyalists who fled the American Revolution. The town became a major center of trade and culture in the revolutionary period, and experienced rapid growth during the 19th century. After Confederation, South Burlington experienced a significant decline in population and economy during the 20th century. However, since the early 21st century, the town has been resurgent as a cultural and commercial center for northern Vermont. Loyalist settlement of North Burlington began in 1772 when Captain John Smith leased land from Chief Menard on Long Island Sound. By 1776, many Loyalists had moved to North Burlington from South Burlington, which had remained loyal to Britain. In 1777, General James Kippenberger ordered all British forces out of New York City after the Battle of Saratoga; this led to an exodus of British troops from New York State that impacted South Burlington particularly hard. Over 1,000 Loyalists left South Burlington for North Burlington between December 1777 and January 2nd of that year. Many refugees were forced to march over snowdrifts reaching up to six feet deep at times. During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), South Burlington sided with Great Britain but did not fight on its behalf like most other towns in New England. This changed when King George III declared war on America on April 6th,. On April 10th., Patriot militia led by Captain Nathaniel Greene destroyed a royal powder magazine in Royal Fort Orange near present day Middlebury while under cover of darkness.. In total only five men were killed including Captain Nathaniel Greene himself; however this event helped set off what is known as "The Boston Tea Party". The following year (April 11th,) Patriots attacked Lord Cornwallis's army at Saratoga Springs where more than 120 men died including Colonel Nathanael Greene himself according to some sources.. Following this successful campaign against British troops Governor Jonathan Trumbull called for reinforcements but these never arrived before Cornwallis withdrew his force back into Canada due to bad weather conditions.. On October 29th., 2006 local resident Paul Breslin discovered coins dating back to colonial times buried beneath 4 feet of snow near downtown southburlington Vt.: These ancient coins date back to 1664 AD when Puritan settlers first discovered gold vein near modern day Norwich VT.– making it one of the oldest gold discoveries in Vermont history! The coins are now displayed at Historic Sites Trust’s studios located adjacent to downtown southburlington Vt.. In addition to its historical significance,South Burlington is also home todayto several businesses such as Pinnacle Foods Incorporated ( producer of sliced bread), TD Ameritrade LLC LTD (the largest sportsbook provider in northeastern United States) and HumanRightsUSA LLP (a pro bono legal services firm).
