The United States Army has a rich history in South Burlington, VT. The town was founded in 1755 as part of the Northwest Territory and became an army garrison in 1776 during the American Revolution. The army withdrew from Vermont after the war, but returned in 1801. In 1815, South Burlington became an independent township and was renamed Burlington. The army again invaded Vermont in 1846 and 1847, both times resulting in small victories for the Unionist forces. After the end of the Civil War, Vermont reverted to its original borders with Massachusetts and New York. However, the army continued to reside permanently in Burlington until 1951 when it relocated to Fort Dix, NJ. Since its inception as an infantry regiment within the Continental Army, Vermont’s 1st Infantry Regiment (1 RI) has fought at various points throughout our history: Mexican-American War (1846), Indian Wars (1857-1862), World War I (1914-1918), World War II (1941-1945), and Korea/Vietnam (1950-1953). Today, members of 1 RI proudly serve their country once again through deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq/Syria where they are supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. In 1917, 1 RI participated in America’s first world war effort by serving on General John J Pershing’s “Black May Offensive” against Mexico City’s pro-German military leadership under General Manuel Arguelles. That same year also saw 2 RI men die during combat operations near Chihuahua City while assigned to Company E of 3rd Battalion 8th Infantry Regiment led by Captain James Paine – one of only two US Armed Forces fatalities during that conflict. During peacetime 1 RI is also used for training purposes by Airborne Commandos detachment 4th Brigade Combat Team which is headquartered at Tower Hill Armory located off State Highway 27 just east of downtown Burlington. This unit provides basic airborne Survival & Evasion Techniques training for Military Police units across North America who conduct emergency response drills such as those related to earthquakes or terrorist attacks

The town's first store, which still stands today, was started by John Davenport. In 1861, Vermont became a state and South Burlington became its capital. The city experienced significant growth during the early 20th century with waves of new immigrants coming to join the expanding labor force. By 1925, South Burlington had become one of the most populous cities in Vermont thanks to its growing commercial district and population of over 100,000 people. However, during World War II South Burlington exploded into activity as it became one of the largest military populations in Vermont due to its location on land that served as an air base for American forces engaged inWWII. After the war ended and troops returned home, economic decline began to set in as businesses closed their doors and jobs were lost within the city limits. However, some entrepreneurs were able to revive downtownSouth Burlington with initiatives such as restaurateur Gerry Gilmore's revival of Dunster House café and clothing store; commercial developer Don Freeman's purchase of vacant properties along High Street; and entrepreneur Rick Reardon's establishment of a small-scale grocery store on Asylum Street known locally as "Reardon's". These efforts helped improve living conditions within South Burlington but also led to neighborhood tensions that continue to this day
South Burlington, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Burlington metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now South Burlington were the Menard family who arrived from France in 1688. They farmed land and built a small cabin on the east side of the river near present-day Middlebury Square. In 1792, Captain John Smith discovered and named the river Bennington after his friend Major General Nathanael Greene. In 1802, Pierre Elliott Trudeau and his father founded Canada's first federal government with their farmhouse as its Headquarters Building. South Burlington was incorporated as a village on December 1, 1834; it became an incorporated town on January 1, 1854. On July 15, 1865, during America's Civil War (1861–1865), Confederate forces burned down houses and stores in South Burlington while retreating from Battle of Monmouth Court House. By 1865 South Burlington had recovered most of its losses; however some homes did not survive until after Reconstruction when they were replaced by frame buildings such as Bolingbrook Village Hall which still stands today across from Elmira High School on Main Street. The post office operated at 203 Old North Road from 1861 to 1965 before moving to 284 Elmira Avenue where it remains today (April 15th through October 15th). The first store west of Center Street opened in 1863 at 204 State Street adjacent to present day First Congregational Church (now Chabad Lubavitch Community Synagogue). On September 12th 1915 local resident Adolf Hitler met Mussolini during World War I at Rockville Centre Gardens in New York City for two hours; this meeting is considered one of history’s most historic moments because it was generally known that Adolf Hitler had no formal political affiliation with any country other than Germany until he joined Mussolini’s Fascist Party later that year The following year Postmaster General Edmond James Grew said “I have never seen anything like it—a community taking sides against its own government” After World War II ended South Burlington gradually lost population due to commuting distance to larger towns such as Rutland orHamiltonbut has since regained some job market reputation due to expanding medical research programs done by University at Buffalo located just west of town limits
