Rutland is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 4,904 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Rutland County and one of the smallest towns in Vermont. The first residents of what is now Rutland were farmers who arrived from England during the Revolutionary War. They built their homes around 1773, when they developed a small village on an area now known as Church Street. Their home was destroyed by fire in 1803 and never rebuilt. In 1814, part of what are now downtown Rutland was burned to the ground by retreating British forces after they retreated from Battle of Bennington. In 1827, Stephen Fenton founded a sawmill on State Road 1 near where present-day Post Office Square stands. He named his mill "Fenton's Mill" after himself and his brother-in-law John Fenton Jr., who had also founded a sawmill in that location some years earlier. The mill continued to be run until it closed in 1928 due to financial problems associated with World War I; however, it reopened several months later under new management as the First National Bank Building (now First National Bank Tower). The commercial growth that followed throughout the 1920s and 1930s led to increased demand for housing which caused development along Church Street between Grand and State Streets to slow down or even stop altogether; however, this did not last long because within two decades many new buildings had been built on top of older ones all around town including Third Ward Hall (1929), First Baptist Church (1930), Second Baptist Church (1931), Masonic Lodge No. 2 building (1932), post office annexes at Fourth Ward Hall (1932) and Fifth Ward Hall (1934). By 1940 there were over 100 businesses located in downtown Rutland employing close to 1,000 people although only about 50% of these were open daily because most businesses closed during wartime shortages due to rationing restrictionsimposed by both American and British governments alike. The rapid postwar expansion which followed brought increased traffic congestion onto main streets leading into downtown Rutland which required widening of those streets but also created more opportunity for development outside of town center such as on State Road 1 eastward towards Rockingham County where many large homes were constructed beginning in the late 1950s onward including much acclaimed developments such as Park Avenue Shopping Center – formerly known as Sears Department Store #1 –[1] Plaza Grande Shopping Center,[2] CVS Pharmacy [3][4][5] Brown’s Sporting Goods,[6] King’s Dominion amusement park[7], Applebee’s restaurant[8][9][10], Shalimar Inn & Spa[11],[12], Waffle House[13], Dunkin' Donuts store[14], Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks.[15] Downtown Rutland experienced its heyday beginning around 1960 when numerous high-rise condominium projects began becoming popular with people looking for either luxurious living space or views of snowcapped mountains while still being able to access local shops/restaurants/transportation options nearby without havingto leave their beloved downtown district . However starting around 2020 things started leveling off somewhat although some notable recent projects have included Riddle Development's new development called “Towne Centre” located adjacent to post office Annex A across from Old Market plaza [/16][/17],[18]. One major downside has been that since then business values have generally moved up alongside residential prices making Downtown Ruxtonite once again less desirable place overall despite continued attraction thereto by residents
Rutland is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 4,575 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Rutland was John Brown who arrived in 1777. He built a log cabin on the east side of the river and named it "Brown's Ferry." In 1802, he married Rebecca Parish and they started a farmstead called "Church Hill". The Browns built additions to their house over time including two wings which were added in 1812 and 1816. In 1835, they erected a log building called the Capitol which served as their courthouse until 1840 when Judge Oliver Wendell Holmes moved his office to Burlington. In 1865, when Rutland became part of Vermont, Captain Samuel Harned erected a small frame house on Main Street for his family's store. By 1870, there were ten stores in Rutland with about 150 residents. A post office was established at Rutland in 1870, and remained operational until 1959. In 1907-08 an experiment was conducted by Commissioner of Public Works Hiram Sibley to see if recycled materials could be used to build buildings instead of new ones using lumber that had been wastefully cut down by sawmills during regular lumbering operations; this project led to the establishment of the Rutland Recycling Project which still operates today
