Navy deployments have a long and storied history in Rutland, Vermont. The Naval Air Station Battlestations at White Sands, New Mexico, were the first naval air stations in the United States. The squadron was activated on November 1, 1907 as an aviation detachment of the 2nd Bombardment Squadron, California National Guard. On February 15, 1912 the detachment became part of Destroyer Squadron 6 which was redesignated Destroyer Squadron 3 on October 16th of that year. The squadron operated out of White Sands until it moved to Norfolk Virginia in 1915 when it became part of Destroyer Group 5 under Commodore John A. Jervis. The group patrolled off the Virginia coast during World War I and made numerous anti-submarine patrols along the East Coast. After World War I destroyer squadrons were re-designated as torpedo squadsrons (i.e., groups with multiple destroyers) and then again as destroyer squadrons (i.e., single destroyers), USS Rutland was transferred from Destroyer Squadron 3 to Torpedo Squadron 5 on May 1st, 1928 and remained there until she was decommissioned on September 30th, 1935 . USS Rutland's final tour came during World War II when she served with Torpedo Squadron 8 which operated out of Newport News Virginia Beach . She played a key role in sinking Japanese submarines off North Carolina during her tour . In 1946 USS Rutland recommissioned at Portsmouth VA under command of Commander Arthur Wohlricht who would serve her through most of her career as Inspector General for Surface Warfare before retiring in 1961 after 38 years operational service.. Inactivation followed in 1960 when she was sold to Colombia for scrapping

The first European to visit what is now Rutland was Jonas Salk in 1932 when he developed a vaccine for polio. In 1812, General John Sullivan and his troops spent the night at the house of Captain Nicholas Herrick on present-day Adams Street after driving off Native Americans who had attacked their forces that morning. In 1825, Dr. George Washington Morse founded Burlington College in Burlington and became its first president; he also served as its first chancellor. The college was renamed Harvard University in 1927 and absorbed by Yale University that same year. In 1954, Boston College merged with Cambridge University to form Harvard University Press (HUP). HUP remains an independent company today with offices in New York City and London. "Rutland's early history is intimately connected with those of neighboring towns: it lies on land grant from King George III to Nathaniel Beebe in 1786; it became part of Burlingtonhire (now Rutland) during the 18th century; and it joined Massachusetts Bay Colony after its independence from Great Britain."
