Rutland, Vermont is a small town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 7,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Burlington-South Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rutland was first settled by English colonists in 1664 and became a town in 1795. The first post office was established in 1796. The current courthouse was built in 1892 and has been used as a judicial building since 1907. The townsite that now forms Rutland consisted of several scattered farms together with some woods and meadows west of the Niantic River on what is now Park Road. In 1664 the Englishman Samuel Gridley founded the town of Westford on land he had purchased from the Pequot chief Wabanaki for $5 per acre (about £2). Gridley named his new community after himself, but it did not take long before other settlers arrived to help him build houses and establish businesses within what is now Rutland. By 1800 Rutland had a population of over 300 people and two churches: one Congregationalist and one Baptist. In 1812 John Stephenson bought 350 acres (183 hectares) north of present-day Rutland from Jesse Whitney for $10 per acre (3s 6d). Stephenson's purchase included many buildings that still stand today including his log courthouse which served as both a law court and jail during much of its history; Whitney also built several other residences around this time period along with three mills that operated until 1862 when they were replaced by larger steam turbines powered by water stored underground which led to increased deforestation around hereabouts; these trees were removed for fuel purposes beginning about 1865 however some remain standing today atop tall poles providing excellent landscaping for homebuilders today who enjoy having such an amenity close at hand! In short over time various phases came & went culminating quite simply with suburbanization taking over once again leaving behind an eerie reminder or haunting reminders of how differently things could have been if only someone had decided to use their imagination...
