The first coffee beans were roasted and ground in the town of Rutland, Vermont in 1795. The earliest record of a coffee shop in Rutland is 1612. In 1801, John Morse opened the first grocery store in Rutland and began to sell coffee. By 1810, there were three cafes operating in the town; two ran by ministers and one by a wealthy man. In 1814, Drury's Coffee House was established as the first restaurant in Rutland with coffee being served until 1830. By 1840, there were six cafes serving customers in Rutland; four operated by ministers and two by businessmen. It was not until after the Civil War that Rutland became an exclusively Dutch-speaking community andamenities changed from Dutch to English at this time. In 1865, Cornelius Vanderbilt founded The Commodore Hotel which became one of the most popular tourist destinations for visitors to Rutland during this time period. This led to increased tourism which also contributed to increasing business for businesses around town such as grocers, jewelers, brewers and more. After Vandyke moved his company headquarters from New York City back to Utica after World War II he donated land adjacent to his hotel so that it could become a co-op market place known as "Rutland Common". This allowed people of all walks of life including small farmers who sold goods from their homes on Saturday morning through Thursday night access to quality fresh produce from local suppliers without having to go out into city traffic or deal with long lines at supermarkets
Rutland, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,563 as of the 2010 census. The name derives from the Dutch word "ruta" meaning Road and "land" meaning land or tract of land. Rutland has been inhabited since prehistoric times by people who lived along the Great Lakes region. In 1675, the first permanent English settlement in what is now Rutland County was established by Capt. John Smith and his party when they journeyed from London through what is now Michigan Territory to establish a trading post at present-day Hartford on the Canadian River. The town was first settled primarily for agriculture but began to industrialize during the early 20th century with textile mills, papermaking plants and other manufacturing businesses opening up around 1910. By 1920, Rutland had become one of the most prosperous towns in Vermont due to its strong agricultural base as well as its location within easy commuting distance of major cities like Burlington and New York City. However, during World War II Rutlend's economic strength decreased because many industries closed down due to wartime shortages of materials such as aluminum and rubber. Although these days there are still significant sectors of industry that remain active in Rutland - such as computer processing and pharmaceuticals - overallenterprise activity has declined significantly over time which has left town with a smaller economy than it once did. Nevertheless, Rutland remains an important center for culture and education within VT; hosting several high school districts (including two Magnet programs), universities (VT Tech & Rensselaar), local shops (several large grocery stores/diners) and several small businesses including a couple restaurants/cafes/.

Rutland is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 12,539 at the 2010 census. Rutland is the smallest municipality in Vermont and the second-smallest county in Vermont after Montpelier. It occupies only 1/10 of a square mile (0.32 km2). The first settlers to Rutland arrived from England in 1675. They built a log cabin on the east bank of the White River, about two miles west of present-day Rutland. The first post office was established in 1785, and the town charter was granted on July 8, 1819. The name "Rutland" originated with John Rutledge who purchased land east of present-day busy Main Street and developed it into what is now downtown Rutland. The mills that were located along Pembroke Road near present-day Central Avenue produced flour for local residents and exported to Boston until 1895 when they moved to their current locations north of State Street. For many years there were also three sawmills operating within walking distance of downtown Rutland; however, these are no longer operational due to abandonment or demolition over time. In 1907–08, construction began on what would become one of the most important civic projects in town's history: the construction of an ice cream parlor called Cream City which became one of America's leading tourist attractions during that era - selling more than 2 million cups per year by 1912. In 1935, Cream City was destroyed by fire but reopened 3 years later as Burlington's first movie theater with WPA subsidies - again becoming an important tourist attraction for both towns during those decades In 1961-62 when Main Street between Church and State Streets became state Route 9A / US 20A following its reconstruction as part of efforts to improve connecting arteries through Rutland County - Cream City relocated south onto this newly reconstructed street once again becoming an important tourist attraction for both towns until it closed its doors for good in 1984 . Downtown Ansonia has since taken over as Cream City's primary business district although some nostalgic elements remain at original location including a small museum (now known as Ansonia Heritage Museum) adjacent to former high school Ansonia Middle School which served as headquarters for company operations from 1906-2008
