Rutland, Vermont is a small town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 3,100 at the 2010 census. Rutland is located on the southern edge of the Town of North Rutland and is bordered by the towns of Derby and Winooski to the north, South Rutland to the east, Burlington to the south, and East Solo Township to the west. Rutland was first settled in 1764 by Peterborough farmers George Carver and his wife Martha Lovell. In 1803, John Dickinson surveyed what would become Rutland. The town was incorporated on February 20, 1825. On January 1, 1834, Rutland became a part of what would become Burlington County. The town's first post office opened in 1824; it closed on September 30th of that year due to low postal rates being offered then. The current post office building was built in 1924 and dedicated on October 8th by Mayor James Meeks Jr.. According to the 2000 census[1], there are 3 churches in Rutland: First Baptist Church (founded 1922), Holy Cross Catholic Church (founded 1903), and Anglican Parish Hall (founded 1955). There are also 2 grocery stores (Grocery Outlet & Supermarket) as well as several small businesses including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company & Community State Bank) as well as a few schools including Northridge Elementary School which serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade; West Middle School for ninth through twelfth grade; and Smithtown Middle School for thirteen-to-fifteen-year olds which serves students fromgrades six through eight. Additionally,[2] there are several private homes listed for sale throughout town with prices ranging from $250K-$1 million depending upon location/condition/size etc.. One such home currently being advertised online resides at 6 Maplewood Drive which has been listed since May 2014 at $217 million dollars!
Rutland, Vermont was founded in 1777 by Capt. John Rutland and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the abundance of trees in the area. The first settler in Rutland was James Averill who built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1802, Colonel George Armstrong settled here and began to grow corn and wheat. He also raised horses and cattle. In 1827, Rutland became a town charter with a population of 10 residents. The first school in Rutland opened in 1828. The post office was established here in 1830 and served until 1903 when it moved to Burlington. Rutland's main industry until the 1920s was agriculture with hay, corn, potatoes, beans and other vegetables being the primary products exported from the town. After World War II, there were many businesses beginning to come into operation such as clothing stores, restaurants and schools within the town limits.
