West Valley City is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. West Valley City is located in the Wasatch Plateau on the west side of the Great Salt Lake. The first inhabitants of what is now West Valley City were Native Americans who lived near present-day CedarCity and Provo. On July 15, 1882, Brigham Young issued a proclamation calling for Mormons to migrate to Fort Bridger and stake their claim to this area where they could explore new land. Over 1,000 Mormon pioneers traveled from Nauvoo, Illinois to Fort Bridger on August 12, 1882. They founded what would become known as West Valley City on November 3rd when they voted unanimously to change its name from CedarCity to West Valley City in honor of President James K. Polk who had helped lead their migration westward across America. In 1907, Baylor University became one of the first universities in Utah when it relocated from Deseret News Building in downtown Salt Lake City to North Jordan Farm near present day Laytonville after purchasing land east of town from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Latter Day Saints). In 1912, Alma Whitehead built an arena for basketball and track called South Park which still stands today and served as home court for many years for both NBA teams Utah Jazz and Lakers before being replaced by Vivint Smart Home Arena which opened in 2018. On October 25th 1909 local merchants gathered at Pioneer Hall then located on First Street between Temple Square and Garnet Hill due to concerns about Bridgeport Oil Field becoming available for development outside of existing towns boundaries; thus creating what would be known as "The Expansion" because all but two streets within town limits were developed including Second Street which became Main Street & Central Avenue with buildings continued north along this newly developed street grid until Junction Place Shopping Center closed down in 1984 completing an increase in businesses south 2 blocks east at Indian Creek resulting in what would be known as "The Downtown" or Old Town while businesses north continued along Second Street until Junction Place closed down also resulting in "NewTown." We are proud to have been part of such a long journey that has led us here today!
West Valley City was founded in 1878, the same year that Salt Lake City was founded. The two cities are located on opposite ends of the Wasatch Mountains and have different histories. West Valley City is a smaller town and has been around for much longer than Salt Lake City.
