West Valley City is located in Davis County, Utah, and is the most populous city in the county. The population was 14,688 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. In 2002, urban sprawl began to spread through West Valley City as developers built new subdivisions on rural land that had been used for agriculture for centuries. The city's old downtown district was gradually lost to development and became a focus for artists and musicians who live near or within walking distance of the hospital, library, museums, and other cultural attractions. In 1941 Charles Waddell sold his business to two brothers – David Hirschhorn (founder and CEO) and Jerry Greenfield (president) – who renamed it Peet’s Coffee Corporation after their father’s favorite brewer Emanuel Peet Sr.. During this timePeet’s Coffee Corporation grew into one of the largest printer-publishers in American with operations throughout 20 states plus Puerto Rico and Canada before selling its printing assets to IBM in 1984. The first coffee shop in West Valley City, Utah opened its doors in 1906. The store was located on South Temple Street and sold coffee from a pot on the counter. In 1915, the store moved to what is now known as 5th Avenue and Main Street and continued to sell coffee from a pot. In 1925, the store moved again, this time to 9th Avenue and Main Street. The shop closed in 1957 but reopened in 1959 as Butte's Coffee Shop. The business was later bought by Harry's Coffee & Tea Company and changed its name to Harry's Coffee House. The business closed in 1986 but reopened in 1990 as Harry's Western Cafe. In 1998, the business was sold to Hansen's Coffee Incorporated and changed its name to Hansen's West Valley City Café.

As coffee growers and consumers around the world have grown increasingly interested in artisanal coffee, certain regions have been essential for the production and consumption of this type of beans. In the United States, these areas include the independent farmers markets that dot the country's rural landscape; The coffee shops that line downtowns and alleyways throughout major cities; as well as small-scale roasteries located in rural towns and villages. The origins of artisanal coffee can be traced back to when African slaves first came overland to America in large numbers in 1820. Because they lacked control over their own land, many American slaveowners purchased or leasedhold parcels of land in order to grow coffee on it. As access to land increased, so too did opportunities for slave owners to exploit their new servants by awarding them freehold rights with privileges such as cultivation and trade rights for their produce. By 1830, a number of small farms had been established within walking distance of major urban centers throughout New England. These pioneer coffee farmers grew an early version of modern artisanal beans using traditional methods such as pressing, brewing, storage and marketing products made from burley (a blend of lower quality roasted Arabica beans) and Java (an Indonesian island where black pepper is also used). In 1836, John Peake founded Peake Coffee Company at his home on Long Island City's seaward coast. The company was soon joined by partners Colonel Ezra Taylor (of Hartford Connecticut) and Dr George Washington Browne who both worked at a previous estate owned by Peake called "Atascadero." Together they developed a process for roasting whole bean coffees which began testing at home in 1840 before being introduced commercially late that year. One key difference between these early efforts was that Peake's team used earth ovens rather than blow-torching or firing pits which gave the beans more flavor & texture; while Browne & Taylor employed an oil burner which resulted in more intense Roasts - often reaching up to 158 degrees Fahrenheit! Today we know that this 3-Phase Process produces mediumbodied & richly flavored coffees with deep red tones – shades found only occasionally through other processes like blast furnace or direct fire processing
