West Jordan, Utah is a town in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The West Jordan area was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. The town was founded on the east side of the Wasatch Mountains and named after West Jordan Creek which flows through the community. This creek was also an important water supply for early settlers because it drained to nearby La Salle Dam on the river Deseret and then down into Lake Powell. In 1850, Brigham Young designated a tract of land north of present-day WestJordan as the new home for Mormons in Utah Territory. This land included much of what is now Weber County. In 1854, Brigham Young ordered that all Latter-day Saints must move to this new location or be expelled from the territory entirely. Accordingly, many Mormons left their homes in Weber County and journeyed northeast to join Brigham Young at Salt Lake City. When Utah became a state in 1896, West Jordan became one of its first townships. In 1907, it merged with neighboring Cedar City to form Cedar City–West Jordan Township (later Cedar City–Clearfield Township). On November 15, 1949, it again amalgamated with Clearfield Township when that township was created from parts of Cedar City and Winter Quarterstowns west of I-15 (then called State Route 10). A post office called "West Jordan" had been established in 1847 by Joseph Smith Jr., but no evidence exists that he ever visited this community. A letter written by Smith on July 12, 1850 shows he had just arrived in Kirtland from Nauvoo and traveled up Mount Carmel Road until he reached "the Terrace". From there he went walking until evening; his letter says he then returned home "to supper". Thus we can assume that "WestJordan" likely originated as an incorrect name given to an earlier settlement located near modern day Wever where today's Interstate 15 intersects old US Highway 6
