It was named for Ensign Wm. H. West (1836-1910), an officer with the U.S. Army during World War I and one of the first American soldiers to die in action on Omaha Beach when he was killed by friendly fire while leading a patrol ashore on July 6, 1944. In 1937, LDS Church president Miron Lyle Snow decided that Brigham Young University should be located in what is now West Jordan so that young Mormon students could have easy access to BYU's curriculum and resources without having to leave their home communities or travel far away. President Snow also wanted to show appreciation for Joseph Smith's Lessons in Liberty lessons learned during the Nauvoo siege and rebellion which had taken place just east of West Jordan when Mormon settlers were forced from their homes due to military campaigns there by General Orson Hyde

West Jordan, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 9,359 at the 2010 census. West Jordan is located on the Wasatch Front and is bordered by Cedar City to the south and east, Provo to the north and west, and Logan to the northwest. The first people to live in what is now West Jordan were the Arches family who arrived around 1848. They were followed by other families over time until there were about 100 people living in West Jordan when it was platted in 1873 as part of Salt Lake City District No. 1. In 1899, Brigham Young designated it a town under his jurisdiction and it became an incorporated village in 1911. It lost its incorporation status because of dissolved municipalities laws but became a city on November 3rd 1978 through an act of the Utah Legislature following passage of Resolution 3881 which sought to improve water quality near West Jordan Reservoir while also providing benefits for residents such as increased property values and access to education opportunities. In 2003, construction began on a new municipal center that would serve as home for all city services including police department, fire department, library system and more. The project was completed four years later with much fanfare including a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by then Mayor Ralph Beckerman and CEO Steven Neumann from Marriott International Incorporated who donated $50 million towards the construction project which included 5 acres of land adjacent to downtown WestJordan Village where today’s Municipal Plaza stands along with several restaurants/bars/cafés/mini golf courses etc., making this one of most vibrant cities within reach!
