Washington, Utah is a town in Cache County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Logan–McAlester Micropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was named for George Washington and his wife Martha Dandridge Washington. The first permanent settler in what would become Cache County were two families who came from Virginia in 1847. They named their new settlement after Mount Vernon, Virginia's president George Washington and his wife Martha Dandridge Washington (1760-1837). In 1850, the town had only a few hundred residents; however, it grew rapidly with the opening of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1875 and its accompanying demand for labor to build its tracks. By 1880, there were more than 2,000 people living in Washingtontown. At that time it was one of the most important agricultural communities on the Great Salt Lake Valley because it supplied much of Logan's wheat production as well as other goods to Cache Valley merchants. In 1907 when Washburne Lumber Co., became one of America's largest lumber companies with mills located throughout Utah and parts of neighboring states including Colorado and Wyoming (the company was founded by Jethro Washburne), Washington Township became home to its largest mill until that point - Washburne Lumber Company Mill #1 which produced both lumber and civic building products such as clocks and chairs for use within Washburne Township itself as well as for export to other locations around Utah including Ogden (then called Winton) in Kane County outside Salt Lake City.
