Washington, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Mountains in central Utah. It is the county seat of Kane County and has a population of 9,868 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from Washington County, one of the original counties formed in 1847 when Utah was organized as a territory. The townsite that now includes Washington was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847. The tiny town received its present name from President George Washington when he visited Kane County during his visit to northeastern Utah on November 10-11, 1799. At that time, General James Wilkinson complimented Washington on his "fine little place" called Clearwater Ferry Landing on the Jordan River and offered him land for it if he would become Governor of EasternUtah Territory. Upon learning this request was made by Wilkinson with no hint of compensation, Washington named his new community "Washington" after himself and returned to Mount Vernon before departing for his next stop in Northern Virginia. In 1857, shortly after Brigham Young became president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), he decided to move the headquarters for their church from Nauvoo, Illinois to what is now Salt Lake City because he saw it as an opportunity to open up new areas for missionary work throughout western Utah and eastern Oregon and Nevada. He also wanted LDS leaders closer to potential converts than they had been able to be north of Salt Lake City proper since their founding 20 years earlier. So instead of moving all their operations into Nauvoo’s downtown area like they had planned originally or build another large building like they did at Independence Station near Logan Airport several years later – which would have required removal of part or allof Nauvoo’s brick architecture – Young directed most missionaries working in western Utah and eastern Oregon then living at Provo’s Capitol Hill Hotel towards Centerville (now downtown Salt Lake City) while continuing operations at Nauvoos downtown temple complex until 1955 when that structure closed following Hurricane Albert damage.* Since those early days when LDS headquarters were located close together outside central city limits within walking distance onlyof each other's residences & churches (& no phone service) elected officials & local residents informal meetings held weekly generally known as “gatherings” (& attended by basically everyone who lived within1/2 mile radius—politicians mostly; lotsusiness people less)— kinda showy things like inaugurations—-& lotsa get-togetherinwashington happenedagreementsweremadeabouttradeeconomies&foreignaffairsamongthemembersoftheChurch Thurston ArmitagebecameleaderofthedeutscheorumandRussellMosesjoinedhimaround1890 *: In 1955 Hurricane Albert caused significant damage to both temples complex however services continued until 1956
