On July 24, 1847, Brigham Young and his followers arrived in Washington Territory after fleeing from Nauvoo, Illinois. They were the first Latter-day Saints to set foot in the United States. The Mormons quickly began a process of proselytizing and building up a small community. On October 12, 1847, they erected their first house of worship in what is now downtown Salt Lake City. The Utah Territory was created on January 3, 1850 pursuant to the Mexican-American War Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The territory was named for President George Washington, who had been born in Virginia and died in office at age 56 years old. The territory included present-day Utah as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona. Mormon settlers continued to arrive until 1861 when white settlement ended due to prosecution by the federal government under the Indian Appropriations Act of 1862.
