Coffee beans were brought overland from Mexico and South America by Mormon missionaries in the early 1800s. The first store in Washington, Utah was founded by George H. Smith in 1892. In 1916, Brigham Young University established its own coffee school and began marketing coffee to local merchants and students. By 1940, there were over sixty stores selling coffee in Washington, Utah alone.
Washington, Utah is a census-designated place in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The population was 829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City– based Wasatch Front region, which also includes Utah's capital and largest city, Provo. Washington was founded by Captain James Cook on November 16, 1779 as part of his reconnaissance mission for British forces occupying what is now Australia. Cook named the site "Easter Island" after his birthplace in England, Easter Island. In 1847, when President James K. Polk recommended that Congress annex California into the United States as a result of its Gold Rush fever-driven population growth, he recommended that America annex Utah to increase US land holdings in North Central California and eastward into Mexico and Peru respectively. When Congress did not act on Polk's recommendation and instead annexed Hawaii into the United States as a result of American annexation efforts during World War II,[1][2][3][4] Washington became an unincorporated territory within either country. In 1959, Washington became one of 11 counties within newly formed Davis County when it was split from Cache Valley.[5][6] The county seat was first established in Cedar City and moved there permanently in 1931; however, Cedar City retained jurisdiction over all local government functions until 1973 when Davis County consolidated with Summit County to form what is now Salt Lake County.[7][8][9] The original courthouse building located on State Street still stands today (renovated in 2007) as the only remaining structure from before Consolidation. On July 1st 2009 Davis County merged with Summit County to form new unified government entity known as “Salt Lake County” effective October 1st 2009 consisting of all former Davis/Summit Counties plus eight otherUtah municipalities: Ogden*, Logan*, St George*, Tooele*, Farmington* *not included in previous merger

In 1795, Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered coffee in the area that would later become California. The Dutch began to produce coffee in the 16th century and by 1795, they had established a small town in what is now Santa Clara County, California called West Point on Mount Diablo. The Dutch name for this place was "Wappenboom". With its strategic location and rich soil, West Point became a center of Dutch trade and commerce. By 1810, the Spanish had arrived in California and started to explore this new land. By 1821, Mexican troops under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna were invading California and encountered a group ofDutch traders at Mission San José which resulted in an battle that ended with a victory for Mexico. After Mexican withdrawal from California, Englishman John Cushing assumed control of Spanish missions west of the Sierra Nevada Mountains including Mission San Francisco (1821). In 1825, due to increasing population density along the Central Coast of America, monasteries such as Mission San Francisco began producing tea instead of coffee because it could be grown more easily there than beans could be grown inland. Coffee production increased rapidly throughout most of pre-industrial America but reached its peak around 1840-60s because farmers could afford expensive planting techniques and higher yields when compared to other crops like corn or soybeans

The Mormons first inhabited the area now known as Utah in the mid-19th century. They were driven out of their original land by a U.S. military expedition in 1847, and they began to settle in what is now Washington County, Utah, in 1850. The Mormons built their first settlements there on the eastern edge of present-day Salt Lake City, and soon afterward organized themselves into a church. In 1862, Brigham Young ordered the construction of a central temple in Salt Lake City, and within two years had founded another church there that became known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1868, LDS Church leaders moved the headquarters of their church from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City so that they could better serve members all over the United States. The LDS Church has since grown to be one of world's largest religious organizations with more than 14 million followers worldwide.
