In Tooele, Utah, the shooting gift history goes back to the late 1800s. On July 26, 1892, a group of men from Tooele came together to organize a rifle club. The club was dedicated to the memory of General George Custer and his regiment that had been killed in action at Wounded Knee. The following year, on October 12th, 1892, the first shooting competition was held at the local fairgrounds. At that time, only shotguns were allowed as projectiles for shooting competitions. Winners received $5 each. In 1896, Tooele’s first rifle range opened its doors and became one of the most popular shooting destinations in southern Utah. With over 100 different shooters from all around town coming to use it, there was always something new on offer for shooters alike. In 1910-1911, an addition was made to the Range Facility which allowed rifles with detachable magazines to be used for target practice! This gave shooters more opportunities to test their skills against large targets without having to carry heavy guns all day long! In 1916-1997 there have been several major renovations and expansions done at therange including: installation of new synthetic turf (1981), addition of a 25ft lanes (1984), construction of a 5D glass slide (1991), relocation of concession stand (1994), and replacement of old galvanized fencing with contemporary fencing (2002). 1928 saw the opening up of what is now called “The Barn” which served as both a clubhouse and training ground for future gunners. It has been said that this structure played an important role in helpingTooele gain its reputation as one of America’s leading firearm communities! From 1927-2006 there have also been several small renovations/upgrades such as: adding air conditioning(1992), installing handicap access(1996), updating signage(2005) and expanding parking lot(2007). These projects helped contribute greatly towards keeping our range open longer than ever before!

The name "Tooele" comes from the Tanana word "towa" meaning "to hide." A post office was established in 1868 and remained in operation until 1907. After surveying much of eastern Utah during his two years as president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), Smith decided upon this location for their new settlement on July 24th 1824 when he rode eastward from Provo across Cedar Mesa to survey what would later become downtown Salt Lake City. The town site was chosen due to its proximity to Cache Valley which lay beyond the Wasatch Mountains on their east side–a view that would be repeated many times over during their Pioneer Days trek through Cache Valley before they finally reached Salt Lake City proper on August 29th 1847 just south of Bear Lake while continuing northeast along present day Main Street towards Yankee Hill Cemetery today’s University Park mall anchors today’s downtown core area bounded by Third Street NW – Pioneer Boulevard SE – South Temple Place SE – North Temple Place SE live oak trees line current 2nd Ave SW
