The general also donated $5,000 towards construction costs for this new school! This particular gift represented an early trend among military commanders and dignitaries from across America who would stop by Tooele on their travels throughout Oregon and Nevada counties during those days (the sagebrush country between Boise and Provo was then covered with high mountain ranges). AGAIN THIS WAS AN EARLY TRADE OF COMMANDERS AND DIGNITARIES FROM ALL OVER AMERICA WHO STOPPED BY TOWELE ON THEIR TRAVELS EACH YEAR WHEN THESE COUNTRIES WERE COVERED WITH HIGH MOUNTAIN Ranges.(3) During World Wars I-III there were numerous tokens gifted either directly or indirectly from individuals/organizations such as donations from businesses owners or memberships from Masonic Lodges(4). The town is located on the Wasatch Front and it is bordered by Cedar City to the east, Taylorsville to the west, and West Jordan to the south. The first permanent settler in Tooele was Wm. H. On October 15, 1870, a group of Mormon settlers from Tooele arrived in Utah. The settlement was located on the southern edge of the Salt Lake Valley and consisted of around eighty people. The first recorded mention of Tooele is in an August 1846 map prepared by Captain James Welles for the LDS church. At that time it was called Springdale. In 1847, Springdale was renamed to Tooele after a local river nearby. The town's first store opened in 1850 and soon there were several other businesses in the area including a school, post office, Methodist chapel, and lumber business. In 1861, Tooele became part of Provo City when Provo County was organized. By 1865 it had become an incorporated town with its own government but continued to be known as Tooele until 1971 when it changed its name to Sandy Bridge Township in honor of then-Governor Michael Laxalt's daughter Sandy Bridges (later Smith).
