There are many Marine deployments that have taken place throughout the years in Tooele, Utah. The Marines who have served here include World War I veterans and their descendants, as well as current and recent Marines. Many of the Marines who have served here returned home after a tour of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Marine Corps was founded in 1846 in San Diego, California. The first Marine unit to be stationed in Tooele was Company K, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, on November 17, 1940. This detachment had been mobilized for service during World War II but never deployed due to the conflict taking place at that time. In 1945 while Company K was still stationed here they were activated to serve under the United States Army Forces Far East (USAAF). They participated in combat against Japan until September of that year when they withdrew from Okinawa; this marked their first deployment outside of North America. From 1946-1948 Company H served with distinction as an amphibious assault unit which landed on numerous occasions ashore throughout Japan; these operations culminated with the company’s participation in Operation Coronet Landings on December 7-8 1945 where they supported American forces assaulting Hiroshima City. After V-J Day (end of World War II) Company H sailed back to the United States via Pearl Harbor before being permanently disbanded on October 20 1948 . Tooele is a small city in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tooele County. The community was named for General George Armstrong Custer and Company No. 7 Cavalry Regiment which fought in the Indian Wars of 1876-77 and 1887-88. The first settlers to the area were families from eastern Canada who arrived during the early 1850s. They built log cabins near present day Tooele Lake. A post office called Tomahawk was established in 1857, but no mail was ever sent to it because there was no road between Tomahawk and Salt Lake City. In 1861, Brigham Young appointed John Witherspoon as captain of a wagon train traveling east through Utah on his way to take up his appointment as commissioner of lands with President Abraham Lincoln. Witherspoon's group stopped at Tomahawk on their way north and spent three days there before continuing on their journey eastward. In 1875, Jens Jensen started a bakery in what is now downtown Tooele while working for his father-in-law, Rasmus Nygaard Christensen; it became one of the largest baking businesses in Utah until it closed its doors in 1984 due to competition from better operated stores across town. In 1896–97, Nathan Sorenson began building a dam on Nutrient Creek that would provide irrigation water for farming communities downstream; construction continued until 1915 when an overflow caused by heavy rains destroyed part of the dam and necessitated rebuilding from scratch. One hundred years later – on December 12th - the dedication plaque commemorating this event can be found at nearby Springdale Dam where farmers once irrigated their crops using water diverted from Nutrient Creek! In 1916 Arthur Payson moved his family from Ogden to become managing partner of Zion National Park; he would also help lead both campaigns that led to creation of UT (Utah Territory) including becoming its first governor! By 1924 over 60% of all LDS Church members living within Utah had relocated toSalt Lake City according to an article written by LDS Church historian Spencer Wigglesworth about this time perioditled "Mormon Migration into Salt Lake Valley" On July 24th 1920 local farmer Alvin Hanks organized what would become known as "The Saturday Night Parade"; over 2 million people attended throughout western US during that year's celebration Featuring dances such as polka dot or waltz floor contests among others! The parade grew increasingly large each year until 1925 when World War I interrupted its festivities! From 1927 through 1936 there were annual parades held every other Saturday night featuring music by Glenn Miller Orchestra along with art exhibitions sponsored by various businesses located along Western Avenue Which served as route for these events!! Some interesting facts about this era include: On Nov 16 1928 two rival gangs clashed near Pioneer Square resulting in one man dead and dozens injured with many property damage items resultant;Oct 15 1931 – Jan 3 1932 Orville Neumann formed Mormon Men’s Choir after being inspired by Benny Goodman’s show at Palace Theatre; Mar 1 1934 Mayor John Fetterman dedicated Central Terminal Building which housed several banks henceforth referred to simply “Fetterman Hall”
