A post office called Cookville was established in 1872, and remained open until 1914. In 1886, a group of Mormon pioneers organized the townsite of Tooele as a stop on their journey to Salt Lake City. They named the settlement Cedar City because Cedar Creek ran through it. Tooele, Utah is a small town in Tooele County, Utah. It was founded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1847. In the 1920s, it became a center for Southwestern oil production and coal mining. Today, Tooele is a suburb of Salt Lake City. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Tooele was Rufus Chappell who arrived with his family in 1847 from England. He erected a cabin on the east side of the river which he named "Chappell's Fort." For many years this site served as an outpost for Mormon pioneers traveling along the Weber River corridor between Cedar City and Provo. In 1850, Brigham Young organized the LDS Battalion and sent its members to build Fort Bridger on the north bank of the Weber River opposite modern-day Tooele. That same year also saw an important event when Joseph Smith discovered additional land within present-day Tooele boundaries that would become part of Mormonism's new kingdom: Zion Valley location just south of Spanish Fork Creek onethe eastern edge of what is today Ogden County was granted to Smith by then- Governor John responseer Bullock as part of territorial government acreage sales under authority granted by President James Kiverton pursuant to Act No., 7 & 8 October 1846 (2 Statutes at Large 1). On 16 November 1850 JS wrote home about finding more land: "We have come over [the mountain] and found two tracts of country lying distant about twelve miles from our city—one tract being 640 feet wide and another 800 feet long—both bearing rivers running through them viz., Beaver one mile long and 30 feet wide; these properties were supposed to be belonging to some gentleman who had lately been expelled from Missouri….It will be seen that we are getting into very extensive territory." On 5 January 1851 JS met Brigham Young while camped out near Bridger Pass with 100 men plus 10 horses encamped around Mount Carmel nearby: "Our brethren feel much upon this occasion because they have lost their homes, families etc.; but I think they will soon get over it." Pioneer pioneer Ebenezer Robinson later said "it seemed like heaven when we laid down our arms at Bridger". Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway reached Aspen Grove Station west of Bridger Pass on 24 November 1850 providing wagon transportation for goods arriving at Bridger Ferry across Spanish Fork Creek on 2 December 1850 (William Clayton diary entry). By early 1851 approximately 400 Mormons had assembled near Coalmine Gulch southeastside Of Spanish Fork Bluffs overlooking Springdale flats where Coal mine began extracting coal during spring 1861 (Ft Worth Historical Society historical pamphlet #3). From Coalmine Gulch several miner’s trails led down into Aspen Grove Canyon where miners enjoyed picnics before going back up canyon past Springsdale Flat to return trip home during winter months (-10 degrees F) Mormon pioneers mined coal inAspen Grove Canyon until 1861 when mining stopped due to low levels ofcoal
