Tooele, Utah is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1857 and named for General George A. Tooele, who had been adjutant general at the time of its establishment. The city's economy is based on agriculture and transportation, with manufacturing also present in some aspects of the local economy. The downtown core is filled with historical buildings dating back to the early days of Tooele's existence as a town. Tooele is a town in Utah, United States. It was founded on November 3, 1847, by the Latter Day Saints as part of a wagon train journeying from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. In 1925, Tooele became the first city in Utah to be incorporated as an independent municipality. The town is located in Wasatch County and has a surface area of 362 square miles (914 square kilometers). The town began as a small farming community near the mouth of the Weber River. In 1847, Brigham Young ordered his pioneers to start out from Nauvoo and march overland through Missouri and Iowa until they reached what is now Salt Lake City. On November 3, 1847, just one day after starting out from Nauvoo, they arrived at Tooele Station on the Eastern Colorado Railroad east of present-day Provo. There were only 25 pioneers living there when they arrived; within two years however, that number had grown to 350 with families and many more single men and women who trekked overland with Brigham Young’s group. In 1850–51 Mormon Battalion troops under Captains John C. Fremont and Orson Hyde invaded Nebraska Territory while handcuffing Mormon leaders Jerald Andrus and David Whitmer for treason; this event precipitated “the greatest political upheaval in American history” On July 24th 1860 Joseph Smith III announced he would be traveling southward towards Carthage Jail where he was then being held for crimes committed prior toJanuary 1st 1844 when he was ordained an apostle—thus fulfilling prophecy given by Elijah Howe about Smith’s restoration: “Behold I will send forth my messenger before your face even unto Carthage Jail . . . He shall proclaim liberty throughout all these nations; yea also Jerusalem shall be delivered up into your hands” (D&C 21:7). TOOELE, UT - Located in Tooele County, Utah, the city of Tooele was founded in 1856 by James H. Tooele and his wife Mary. The town was named for John Tootalooqua, a Native American who assisted the fledgling Mormon settlers in their wanderings through Utah during the mid-19th century. In 1872, Tooele became an incorporated municipality with a population of approximately 15 residents. The following year, the city voted to annex neighboring Glendale and renamed itself Tooele City (renaming two other municipalities along the way). In 1904, council decided to erect a high school within the limits of town and approved plans for a large downtown district that would encompass much of what is now known as Tooele Square. By 1910, however, construction on the new high school had not yet begun and all but one floor had been completed when it was destroyed by fire. Reconstruction began immediately and soon enough the building had been rebuilt to its current form. In 1916, Mayor George Romney donated land east of downtown for a public library which would eventually become one of Utah's most important cultural institutions. The first building on this site - currently home to BYU-Deseret Book - opened its doors on October 1st that same year. The facility served as both a library and general store until 1967 when it was remodeled into an auditorium and multipurpose hall used exclusively for religious services until 1985 when it was closed completely due to budget cuts. During World War II, local businesses helped contribute significantly to Utah's war effort by manufacturing munitions and supplies needed by military forces overseas.
